Crib Transition

Hi all--I feel like it's been forever, and I've been lurking, but just haven't had the spare moments to post recently.

However--I have a question, hoping someone can give me an idea of what to do.   We brought DS home straight to his napper on the P&P.  He has done all of his sleeping in that or his bouncer since coming home.  At 1 mo I wanted to transition him into the crib, so I started trying w/ naps.  Every time I have put him in his crib to nap, he sleeps 30 min or less (sometimes single digits), and gets more and more fussy as the day goes on and he sleeps less.  Since DH is not here, and it's just been me doing this, by mid-day I feel horrible about depriving him of sleep and go back to the normal places he's used to so that he can get a good nap in.

My SIL has a bassinet which is a bit larger than the napper but not as big as the crib.  She's lent it to me, but so far, same result.  It seems as if the space + being flat on his back startle him, and he can't maintain a good, deep sleep, even if he is dead to the world before I put him down.

Soooo, my question is, has anyone else dealt with this?  What did you find made the transition easiest?   I want him to sleep in his crib, but I just feel like I'm making him suffer by continuing to try, not to mention that it messes up his sleep for the rest of the day/night.

Also--He's 10.4 lbs.  I've heard something about 11 lbs being a 'magic number' as far as sleep, but I don't know if it would apply to where he sleeps....

Also Also--Congrats to everyone on your children!  I missed the ones after I had mine, dealing w/ the new addition and DH leaving, but still wanted to say it  :)

Re: Crib Transition

  • My LO is almost 8 weeks old and I started transitioning him to his crib 6 days ago.  He does a decent job of sleeping in there.  At night he will wake every 2-3 hrs to eat which is normal for him.  Prior to this though he would sleep 5-7 hr stretches in his infant car seat.  So last night I put him in his car seat and put the seat in his crib.  He slept a 5 hr stretch the first part of the night.  That felt great!  So he was in his crib technically but not laying flat.

You mentioned he will sleep in his bouncer.  Can you put him in the bouncer and then put the bouncer in the crib?  I did this with my oldest before.  That way he is in the crib but on an incline and in a smaller space.

The best thing for the transition, I think, is consistency.  Continue to lay him in his crib for naps and bedtime.  If he's having a really hard time though I would stop and wait another week and then try again.

  • Our LO had been sleeping in the napper part of his PNP too, and last night we put him on the flat part of it for the first time. He took a long time to fall asleep, but he slept for 3 hours. He had been sleeping swaddled in the napper for 5-6 hour stretches. He has always taken his naps in his swing and we've never had a problem with him sleeping in a different place at night.  I figure it will take him a while to adjust being on a bigger surface without being swaddled.

  • Are you swaddling?? I'd try that if not since your lo is used to be snug while sleeping it may help.  Also not sure where you heard 11lbs is a magic number for sleep but with my older two it so wasn't!

  • My son would only sleep in the bouncer until 6 weeks. Then he started falling asleep in the travel crib we have in our bedroom, but wasnt sleeping soundly or for any real amount of time past 15 minutes or so. We rolled up a towel and placed it underneath the mat in the crib (its like a mini playpen is all) and he liked sleeping on that slight incline vs flat on his back. Also he would not sleep unless he was swaddled.very well. Having his arms and legs free when he is sleeping is very unnerving for him. Perhaps try these tthings? Gl!

  • We have the same issue, even being a poor sleeper in her bassinette. We've taken a break from trying the crib and have just focused on consistency in her bassinette, but in her nursery. She actually slept 4.5 hours straight last night (her norm is 2.5) and this has been a gradual increase over the past week.  We are also doing a double swaddle so she can't get her arms free and I think this has helped. I'm going to try naps in her crib again in another week. Maybe when she's a little older she'll be better able to sleep in her crib.
