Baby Names

Is this middle name too weird?

We're team green, but if we have a boy we're going to name him Vincent. For a MN, DH and I were considering Amedeo. This was the name of my (very italian) family's patriarch, who died a couple years back. I only knew him briefly, but he was dearly beloved by everyone.

As much as I love the association, am I dooming my kid to a lifetime of awkwardness? It's a legit name (the italian version of the name amedeus), but I'm pretty sure we'll be the only ones to have used it in at least half a century. Thoughts and brutally honest opinions welcome.

  •  It is a really strong name - exudes confidence!

We are battling a similar situation - my question is how often is a middle name used?  That's what we keep asking ourselves.  We want it to "flow" nicely and at the same time - no one ever really has to know and say the middle name.... unless the child (as an adult) makes that choice....right?

    So tricky - good luck!!

P.S. As an Elena (mine is pronounced Aleena) I hope you have a girl!! :)

  • I don't think it's that bad, plus it's a MN so it probably won't really be used that often, right?
  • I prefer Vincent Amadeus (so cool sounding!), but Amedeo is fine, too. MNs are rarely used anyway.

  • I like it, and I like that it is tied to your heritage.

    Vincent Amedeo sounds nice.

  • It's unusual but not too weird. I like the connection to your family's history. It might be a bit much for a first name but I think it is fine as a middle name.

  • I always say go weird with the middle name if you're wanting to.  My bff so regrets that she didn't use Wolfgang as her son's middle name as she wanted to.  Another friend gave her son the middle name Aristotle.  If your kid doesn't like it, it's easy to hide the middle name.

  • It's a middle name and won't come up very much unless you choose to call your child by his middle name. Go for it!

@lclaws: I just thought it was funny that I was thinking amedeo (from amadeus) and your bff wanted wolfgang. Classical music buffs much? ;)

  • I like it. I'm a big fan of using the middle name slot to honor family members. It is a little different, but middle names are hardly ever used and it could be a good conversation starter for your LO (explaining who he's named after).
