s/o baby shopping - great checklist!

I saw this on a baby blog I bookmarked - it is a new baby checklist. It is really comprehensive. I am going through it while creating my registry/shopping list. Thought I'd share it because I am finding it really useful. HTH!

Re: s/o baby shopping - great checklist!

  • Very helpful.  Thanks.  As a first time Mom, I'm a little overwhelmed, but this will definetly help me get organized.  Thanks for sharing.

  • This checklist is useful. When I'm looking at baby stuff (which is exciting!!!) I just try to keep in mind that babies don't need everything that is marketed for them. I can't tell you how many of my friends own at least one "major" baby item that they have admitted that they never used.

It took awhile to get pregnant with DS, and I had a complete and well researched registry by the time I got a BFP.

First time moms, check out Baby Bargains. I think the 9th edition (2011) is the most recent. It's hands down the best baby stuff consumer guide out there.

  • this is a great list, gotta love amazon! Just fyi too... amazon mom's is AMAZING! We have amazon prime and combine that with amazon mom's/subscribe and save; I get diapers and wipes delivered to my front door cheaper than if I had to go to a store and use coupons.

Eh... I don't have a registry so to speak. When we were TTC, I did start a list of things we will need for a baby. I did this for two reasons: 1) so I could start researching and estimating the costs of different items new and used (cloth diaper start up costs, a doula, a crib we can side car, nusing bras, etc) and 2) so that we would have time to think through the list and differentiate between what we need and what we want, or what is unnecessary for us. A lot of baby cost "calculators" include lots of things that MH and I don't want or know we won't use.

We don't use credit cards anymore, so we needed to make sure we have the liquid cash to be able to provide for the needs of our baby, esp if someone don't throw us a shower.

No I dont think it is.  We have at least 6 more months to think about registries and checklists.  Dont stress yourself too early.  Trust me we dont use credit cards either but if its your first or you are registering because your getting a shower then relax.

I'm not planning anything at this point. Not even discussing names. I'm not sure why you mentioned credit cards? I didn't think these things were normal but I see women here who are buying clothes at 6 weeks, bottles at 8 weeks, strollers at 10 weeks, etc. I'm starting to think I am the odd one. If I had a shower I would want it to be after the baby is born so I'll have plenty of time.

Picking up things that you find here or there is perfectly normal.  If you chose not to do so that's fine, but yeah I would consider that normal.  The only reason we bought the stroller which you are referring to was the promotion that allowed me to get a stroller I would not typically be able to afford.  It will stay in it's box with the receipt for a long time.  I'm glad to see we have a judgey Mcpherson on here, it just wouldn't be the same without one.

I had clothes before we were even trying for LO #1 (because they were a great deal) and when we started trying I had already researched the brands I wanted for our major purchases.  I don't think there is anything wrong with doing your research early and creating a checklist.  I do caution against registering this early though since many companies update styles a few times a year so things such as bedding pattern may not be available by the time you have a shower.

FWIW, we will be buying LO#2's dresser pretty soon.  Our schedules don't allow us many free days to drive the 1.5 hours to Ikea to get it.

I'm not judging. I'm genuinely surprised. I had no idea women bought things this early in the game, especially anything other than clothes. Either my friends and family haven't or they didn't talk about it. There no need for you to get offended by my surprise and confusion over whether this is typical behavior or just something a small number of women tend to do. I'm seeing quite a bit of it here - hence why I may be in the odd minority.

I totally agree with NechamaChayim.  I also dont think anyone is judging anyone but simply just having different opinions.  Also I am not talking about picking up things here or there if you find an awesome deal and if you can return it after a long time thats great,  but most places are 90 days and I returned most of my stuff when my daughter was born because of sizes or simply didnt need it.

ohhh and NechamaChayim...I said credit cards because a girl said that was her reason for starting now.

  • Thanks!  I have a registry (just for us, really) on Amazon, but that will help me make sure I'm not forgetting anything!

  • Thanks for this!

We've been TTC for over a year and a half, and had 3 miscarriages, so adding stuff to my registry as a way to keep my eye on the prize, so to speak. And if I'm about to spend more than $50 on something, I want to make darn sure that it's exactly what I'm wanting.

That, and I like to stagger out costs instead of having to pick up stuff at the end. Especially if its something you can't really have too much of, like bottles or nurse pads.

  • Glad a lot of you found the checklist useful!

I am not buying that much yet but I really like planning and all this baby stuff takes a lot of research IMO. Plus if you see a hot sale, it is worth saving the money. Amazon allows returns for a year too so you can always send it back if needed.
