If you've experienced an ectopic pregnancy...

What was your experience/symptoms like? I'm wondering if I need to go to the ER. The last two weeks I was having pain on my lower left side from possible cysts from the clomid I was on. Yesterday evening the pain has increased. I can still somewhat function, but it feels like someone kicked me, and it's a dull pain that is constant. From last night to now, I haven't had any relief from it. I don't have any bleeding. The pain hasn't brought me to tears, but all I want to do is sit or lie down. Im not sure if I should just wait until Monday to call my OB or just go in. What would you do?

Re: If you've experienced an ectopic pregnancy...

  • I should add that the cyst was never confirmed, I haven't had an appointment yet with my doctor. But I did have cysts from clomid my last pregnancy.

  • With it being Saturday, I would go in. Monday is a long time to wait if you're hurting and even longer to have to wait for answers. GL!

  • Is this something I can go to urgent care for? I have never personally been to the ER.

You can go to the ER for a possible ectopic on the weekend. Unless you're in a major hospital, ERs are not nearly as hectic as you might imagine them. When I miscarried in April I had to go to the ER. I was the only one there when I was checking in, and everything was very relaxed and low-key.

And if I were you, I would go to get it checked out. If it is an ectopic, then the earlier you go, the greater the chances they can save your tube. If you wait until it ruptures and you're in excruciating pain and having severe internal bleeding, they won't be able to save it. Even if it turns out to be "just" a cyst, it'll be good that you know it's not an ectopic. Good luck!

I don't know that an urgent care would be able to do an ultrasound, which is what you need (along with blood work) to help diagnose you. I would go to the ER if you're concerned.

Congrats to both my TTC buddies, Amberley18 and sb2006 on their beautiful babies!
  • You could probably call an urgent care facility and see I'd they have an ultrasound machine. You wouldn't want to waste a trip to UC if they can't help you. The ER is probably your best bet.
  • My pain was sharp, causing me to bend over when it hit. That was for only a day or two, and Tylenol took the pain away. I started spotting a day after the pain started.

  • I would call your OB's on-call line and tell them what's going on.  They may tell you to go to whatever hospital they have privileges at, or they may tell you it's nothing.  My pain was more severe than regular cramps with no spotting right away.  But, I was curled up in a ball on the couch.  By the time I had really started spotting, I had a dull ache to almost no pain and thought I'd imagined the whole thing.  It's better to talk to your doc and see what they say.  Like another post said, it's a long wait until Monday.

     Good luck!

  • I was bleeding like mad...27 days when they finally listened to me and did an US.  But I had no pain of any kind so no one would listen.  Even the ER doc who did the internal exam, had his HAND on the ectopic in the tube, and told me it was a cyst.  I asked 4 times for an US and was denied every time.  They told me I was having a miscarriage.

Do not let the sun set on a possible ectopic.  After my experience, I would say go in and demand the care you think you need.
