What carrier is best for newborns (and new-to-babywearing-FTMs)? Sling? Wrap? Mei tai? I'd prefer something that doesn't require an infant insert. Thanks ladies!

When we brought my guy home from the hospital (7lbs) we used three different carriers. The first night DH wore him in a moby, which I continued to use around the house. When we went out and I wore him we used a Babyhawk Mei-tai. When we went out and DH wore him we used the Catbirdbaby Pikkolo. None of these required an infant insert.
Get a wrap conversion ring sling. By far the best newborn carrier, and you can use it as your baby gets older. The other I used a ton (and still use pretty much daily) is my woven wrap. I hated the Moby, it's hot and sags. Woven wraps are a world of difference. Didymos makes great ones that are great for those starting out.
I agree that Didymos is a great brand, but don't get discouraged by the sticker price! Vatanai wraps are also fabulous for newborns (so soft!!) and Storchenwiege Leo wraps will last you from newborn to preschool, and they are less than $130 on Amazon.

Baby Ktan is my favorite. It's like a Moby, but without all the wrapping. I love it. I use it exclusively for the first 4-6mo, and then I start using an Ergo also.
