Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Sitting and falling

My sweet little girl (6 1/2 months) sits up on her own but often loses her balance and falls hitting her head on the floor. Is this normal or should I be concerned? She cries sometimes but always gets back up to play again. I just don't want her to have a head injury that I'm not aware of. Thanks for the help mommies out there...

Re: Sitting and falling

  • She's fine.  All babies fall and bonk their head sometimes.  The only time you need to be concerned is if there is blood (duh), you are unable to console her, or her behavior/eating changes drastically.

  • with our son when he was learning to sit unassisted we made sure his legs were apart while he was trying to find his balance.

  • Do you have a boppy?  If so maybe put that down behind her when she's sitting until she gets her balance.  Otherwise I wouldn't worry about it too much.  Kids are pretty resiliant and she will be fine.

  • I place pillows around her so when she falls she has a soft landing.

  • Don't worry, she will figure it out. Just wait until they start pulling themselves up on everything! My DD is so wobbly but it's just part of the learning process. All you can do is try to lessen the blow. We used pillows behind when she learned to sit and I will slide a pillow behind her now to plop down on.

  • Yes, it's how they learn. DS just started sitting up unassisted this weekend.
