Blended Families

I got SS to eat healthy FINALLY!

After months of issues (and so much undermining from my in-laws I could scream) we have achieved getting SS to eat healthy balanced meals. (We just had to move out of the crazy house). His BM is admittedly not a cook and mostly does processed foods or fast foods, so between that and the in-laws DH and I had a heck of a time instilling good eating habits. However SS has made so much progress in the eating department! I'm so proud of him!

This is more of a parenting thing I realize and I'm bragging terribly but this has been a long tantrum filled road so I'm really glad things are going well!

  • Yay for healthy eating!!! It's hard with all kiddos to impress upon them the importance of healthy eating, even without the outside influences. I'm glad you were able to get him to start liking the healthy stuff without too much fighting.

We had a picky eater with SD1 so I feel your pain (and joy at your success).  Definitely check out Deceptively Delicious.  It's written by Jerry Seinfields wife and it's about adding pur?ed veggies to kid friendly meals

ooooh thank you! :) I do try to sneak things when I can! I buy "Naked" brand (and a few others from time to time) smoothys and mix them with a little juice to get some extra veggie fruit servings!

  • I had the hardest time breaking SS's addiction to poptarts. Every morning he would ask for them for breakfast and throw a fit when I told him we didn't have any (I refused to buy them for a 3 year old). Now he enjoys the real breakfasts he gets when he's here.

I got really lucky with breakfasts because SS loves yogurt and fruit!  My problem is he wouldn't touch a vegetable unless I really hid that it was there and he was so far into carbs and starch he just expected hamburgers, pizza, and potatoes all the time. Not to mention my in laws feel that sugar (even in vast amounts) has zero affect on children and would fill him full of cookies as I'm trying to get dinner started (again thank GOD we moved). My SS is also 3! :)

  • I'm so proud of you! We eat organics and healthy stuff, but when the 2SD are with BM they literally eat nothing but dollar menu fast food or ramen noodles.  They eat junk food 24/7, have no set bedtime and no good meal schedule. The oldest SD was told by her doc that she was obese and needed to eat better, BM was there and heard this, but of course she can't be inconvenienced by grocery shopping and cooking.  We try our best, but there's only so much you can do.

You are doing the absolute best thing you can do for SS by teaching him and showing him how to eat healthy.  You are an amazing mother

Well that made my day! That's incredibly sweet of you! We try really hard to go organic- were lucky in where we live that we have a lot of local food available and I really love to cook. We're also lucky in that because we have SS the majority of the time now- we have a better chance of getting to instill these good habits in him. Thank you for the praise though- that's very generous of you.
