1st Trimester

Food suggestions?

Could you please share some food/snack ideas that are working for you this pregnancy?  I am finding that I have to eat every 2-3 hours to avoid uncontrollable nausea, but the problem is nothing ever sounds good.  I have to force feed myself every time.  :(  I'm going grocery shopping later today and was trying to think of things that would be easy/good/healthy and nothing sounds good at all.

Re: Food suggestions?

  • fruits like grapes, small apples, oranges, etc are good to snack on throughout the day. also, i would get that box of small mixed individual serving of cereals and snack on a box of those every day ( i think like 16 are in one wrapped up flat)

  • mandarin oranges, string cheese, crackers dipped in cream cheese, veggies and hummus, apple slices with peanut butter... I snack with my kids on whatever they're eating.

  • During my first pregnancy I was super sick.  I won't tell you how long because it will just freak you out!  :0)  Anyway, I ate a lot of peanutbutter crackers, string cheese,Mc Donalds milkshakes, and Easy Mac. Not the best foods I know.  But I was so sick that my dr said to eat anything that I could keep down.

  • Chicken and rice soup. It's light enough that is doesn't make me sick, and it satisfies my salty craving.

  • Fruit has been appealing throughout the m/s period, esp. bananas. Even though they turn me off, almonds have made me feel better if I force myself to eat them. I also think that string cheese, being bland and low fat, is a good choice. Hummus and Triscuits, too.

LOL that sounds like me!  I was sick every single day until I delivered.  And not just nauseated-actually throwing up.  If I *only* puked 3 times in a day it was a good day.  :/  I got to the point where I only ate things that I knew were easy to throw up.  Hopefully this one doesn't last as long (although I'm hopeful because the m/s was WAY worse by this point last time).

Thanks everyone for the suggestions.  I've been loading up on fruits and will continue to do so and now I have a few other goodies to put on the list.

  • gluten free crackers with cream cheese and apricot preserves

    chocolate almond butter

    mashed potatoes

    gluten free macaroni and cheese

kind's fruit and nut bars  (sorta like a granola bar but no wheat, oats, etc)

thinking of trying some gluten free pizza later but i have no idea how that's going to go. it may work..or I may vomit. who knows. i was doing smoothies with various fruits, greek yogurt, almond milk and spinach. i don't know if i can stomach that today.

  • I keep trail mix at my desk all day. The protein in the nuts really helps the nausea.  Also, easy mac was a life saver when I was pregnant with DD ( I had morning sickness in all 3 trimesters)

Grilled ham and cheese, chex mix, crackers with cream cheese.

  • Fruit has been great for me. I've started keeping bananas around--and eating them a lot.

    Hummus and veggies

    cheese and crackers

    chips and salsa/guac

    Trail mix

Most of these combinations have a good amount of protein and "good" fat in them, which makes them good for your developing baby and will help keep you satiated longer.

  • With a toddler I would suggest quick things.  Are you on pinterest?  There is a toddler snack box type thing on there that I pinned for myself.  I don't keep the foods in a box but I always keep the following things on hand:  carrot sticks, celery, string cheese, dried fruit, hard boiled egg, fresh fruit, crackers, nuts, peanut butter.  I don't have a lot of time to sit and eat but I have enough time to run to the fridge and grab a string cheese and handful of grapes every few hours.  I also am loving Kale chips right now.

  • Yogurt is my absolute favorite--I eat it when I get up in the middle of the night and first thing in the morning, it always helps my stomach. I love that I don't have to chew it too :)

Other things: graham crackers, PB&J on white bread, tapioca pudding, plain potato peirogies (boiled), string cheese, canned fruit like mandarin oranges and peaches.

  • Oh and I forgot, crackers with cream cheese too. I am amazed by how much overlap there is on these replies--apparently string cheese is some sort of pregnancy super food!!
  • I haven't actually been sick yet - although I've been close a couple of times! But I am nauseated basically all the time and like you, it gets worse if I don't eat every couple of hours, but also like you, I never want to eat anything. I don't usually feel hungry, just gross all the time. It's driving me crazy. And, I know I should be eating good for me things but at this point I'm just eating anything and luckily one of the things the takes me happy is fruit - specifically raspberries and grapefruit. But, I get tired of eating all the time. It feels like I've just had dinner (I did, less than two hours ago) and I know I need to eat again. I hope this goes away after a while! I'm currently 6 weeks today! First appointment tomorrow. I'm also considering trying some candied ginger, as I hear it helps with the nausea. GOOD LUCK!
  • I concur with the bananas, small apples, string cheese.  Also, I too have had good luck with almonds.  At trader joe's they sell little snack packs and I've just hoarded those in my desk at work.  Also oyster/soup crackers have been great.  But I generally need some protein, so string cheese, hummus or peanut butter have all fit the bill.   I'm keeping instant rice on hand too.  Watermelon, potato chips and lemonade (watered down) have all been good too.
