April 2012 Moms

I was totaIlly judged for wearing my baby....

I went to Starbucks this morning with Eden asleep in the (diy) Moby. I walk up to the door and I hear these two chicks behind me start talking about how dangerous the wraps are and how irresponsible it is for mothers to carry their babies in them "just so they (the parent) can have a little more freedom." They both have infants and are carrying them in their carseats.

So, I got to the door, turned around and held it open for them. I couldn't resist the opportunity, so as they walked past me, I said "all this extra freedom realllllllllllly comes in handy!" To say they looked embarrassed would be an understatement.

Win.

Am I the only one who notices that babywearing attracts a lot of attention??

  • Really? Good grief. I feel like when I don't wear L around here and take him into the grocery in the stroller people look at me like I'm crazy! LOL...just kidding....it seems everyone in my area  does baby wearing...it's just simpler.

  • it's also popular in my area and i feel like im judged when I don't babywear.

This morning at the farmers market people looked at me like my snap n go was so inconsiderate but I knew I had a lot to carry and needed the basket underneath

  • Ha! Nice response.

I also live in an area where everyone babywears. Sometimes I feel like the odd duck when I have him out in the stroller.

  • How is it dangerous? I don't wear by baby all the time but I do like to from time to time and she seems to enjoy it. I have the baby balboa.

It seems that they just don't like it, but I hate the whole judging mom thing. Mom wars?!?

I was judged at the mall by a 100 yr old for not covering my daughter. It was 95 degrees outside and mid 80s in the mall. Just because your old as dirt and have no blood flow left doesn't mean the rest of us should be bundled up. My LO had a sweat head.

  • I wear DD everywhere. I've had quite a few comments both to me and within earshot, and every single one has been positive. I've had a couple of side-eyes that I've noticed, but I was NIP too, so it was more than likely that.

  • There were some incidents a year or so ago were some babies died in a certain type of baby wearing mechanism (it was more of a purse-like carrier were the baby could curl up and suffocate - nothing like the Moby, Ergo, etc.), and many people took those stories and applied them to every type of carrier. There was a lot of backlash against the babywearing community at large at that time. Those ladies may be remembering some of that still and over-generalizing. Luckily I live in a huge baby wearing area, but even still I had an old lady come up to me last week and ask how the baby could possibly be breathing correctly strapped onto my chest like that.

  • Silly bishes.

One of the major drawbacks of twins is that I can't just wear them everywhere. Everywhere I go is a major production involving car seats and the stroller. I'd love to just throw a baby in a sling and go about my business.

There is a lot of misinformation out there re: babywearing. I went to a class for first time mothers class and the nurse who taught it stentor discouraged babywearing as it was dangerous. She had articles backing her up- they all were in reference to the recalled infantino bag slings. There were numerous suffocation/obstruction related deaths. I of course corrected her and outlined the benefits of safe babywearing, the next week I brought in my Moby, ring sling and ergo to give demonstrations. I bet she was thrilled to have a nurse/LC in the group-I totally want her job she gave a lot of shitastic advice. Ateal-love the comment. I have always gotten positive feedback babywearing is not too common here- I often am asked how she can comfortable like that tho.

  • I bet those judgy women are the same ones that will go put that car seat on top of a shopping cart...

When I go out with H, we he likes to haul the carseat around or use the stroller.  When I am alone, I use the moby.  I guess it is selfish of me to want to have my hands free when I am out with my little guy.

People stare at me when I wear her too. Actually most people say, "oh! There's a baby in there! I thought you were pregnant!"

Um. No. If you look, there are clearly baby arms, shoulders, and head poking out the top. Pretty sure that didn't happen when I was pregnant.

  • I wear Sadie every time we leave the house, and i attract way more attention than I want. i haven't gotten any negative comments yet, but I'm sure I will. There are very few babywearers here, and I've never seen anyone else using a woven wrap.

  • Isn't baby wearing BETTER than constant car seat usage? Because it would help with avoiding the flat head?

My MIL was concerned too, she said the baby might not be able to breathe in close to my chest like that. But I can feel her breathing so I am more worried she'll stop breathing when I'm NOT wearing her!

  • Not a lot of baby wearing where I am... But I've never had a judge-y comment (that I've overheard at least).

It's seriously like people think I'm a fricken celebrity, I'm constantly stopped and asked about where I got my wrap (homemade fauxby), and people think it's such a clever idea to baby wear.  I've actually had people stop me and ask to take a picture.

And it's not like I'm in a small town either...

Does that help your LO to keep cool? I sometimes feel like Eden is burning up in there because the fabric is pretty thick...I was thinking of maybe getting some woven fabric to make a Summer Moby.

    Hahahaha!

In Europe, because we've been walking so much and it's hotter than Hades, DH has been wearing DS in our Britax. Everyone stops him to tell him how awesome it is and how cute they look together as daddy and son, it's awesome. Although if I wasn't there, there are definitely some chicks who would have been hitting on him haha. Baby=chick magnet apparently.

  • I got muslin similar to the a + a blankets to make my fauxby. It is so much cooler for the summer!
  • Yes! A woven is a million times cooler than a moby- think gerber flat cloth diaper thickness. The one in my siggy is a Didymos Aqua Waves (which is crazy expensive, but I got it used at a thrift store for a steal), but you can make one that will work just as well out of gauze or osnaburg from the fabric store. Plus, a woven gives you way more options for carries- you can't do a single layer carry or back carries with stretchy fabric.

(I wrote a crazy long response to your DIY Moby post the other day that talks a lot about making your own wrap)

Would you mind linking to that? How time consuming is it? We are heading to Disney and we are way too hot in the Moby I plan on using the ring sling more but another (cooler) option would be nice

  • I get looks a lot, but the only people to talk smack about it are my neighbors... They also told me that they would leave their babies in bouncers and swings as often as possible. Having the baby touching me 18-22 hours a day is normal for me...  To each their own I guess! And Tuck - I think you should be our baby wearing guru!

You should make one! They are ridiculously easy to put together and mine only cost me $7.50 for 5 yards of fabric. Clearance rack all the way.

I also heard that you can use woven fabric without even needing to hem the edges.

  • I wish I could wear Julian..but the carriers are expensive, and honestly I know jack squat about them. I feel like I would like one...but it's hotter than hell on a Sunday over here so maybe a light one...I think it's awesome that some of you mommies make your own...if you wouldn't mind, do you think one of you could post a how to thing? I'm sure it's been done but I would appreciate it! I also am wondering if someone could explain the different kinds of wraps and whats best? I'm sure I could google it but im lazy and...thats why im on this site right?

  • Baby wearing constantly results in comments.  It is not common where I am and I don't actually think many people have seen a baby in a sling.  Today a woman told me how uncomfortable my lo looked and how sad it was.  I said "no no no, she is fast asleep and very comfortable."  I don't think I should have to explain myself to them but hate for someone to think I am deliberately making my lo uncomfortable or in pain.

side note though, my lo hates the car seat and if I walked into a store with her in one she would be screaming.  She is much more comforted by the sling.  Those women know nothing.

  • Babywearing is not very common around here (especially in rings or wraps) and the few times I wore Maggie in public I got some weird looks.  Once an old lady came up to me in the grocery store, got really close to me, and asked to see the baby.  I'm fairly certain she was just checkin' out my tatas Wink

DD has torticalas and her PT said that we should wear her as much as possible so she can work on her neck muscles and avoid a flat head.  I would have had a few choice words to say to those people.
