Confused about solids size

Admittedly, I haven't done too much research on giving finger foods. DD is still fed purees and feeds herself puffs.

I'm thinking about having her self feed more but I'm confused about the size of the food I should be giving her.

I believe BLW said to have steak-fry size pieces for LO to grab and gnaw on. Then I read in the fruit post below that some of you are cutting grapes in 1/4 and blueberries in half.

So, what size should it be?

  • I try to keep pieces no bigger than the size of a puff

    Same here....

  • Depends on the food for us. I will hand her a half a freezer waffle or a sweet potato fry, things like that, and let her have at it. Fruits like peaches, bananas, kiwi, etc, veggies like green beans and carrots, and meats get cut into puff/cheerio size bits. Apples, pears and cheese she gets shredded.

Grapes and blueberries should be quarted because the round shape and their size make them a choking hazard. I still cut DD1's grapes and she's almost 2.5.

  • DD couldn't pick up small pieces until about a month ago so I was cutting food into sticks for her to gum/gnaw on.  She can pick up small pieces now but I still sometimes give her the stick shapes depending on what it is.

  • Our pedi said smaller than the windpipe, unless it's soft (i.e. no whole celery, etc).

  • I really think it's a matter of what your comfortable with and what your child can handle.

I leave most foods in pretty big pieces for my LO. I'm not much of a worrier and she seems to be able to handle larger pieces better (ie eats better) than if I mash something up in little chunks. She does well if can just grab and gnaw. We've had a couple gagging incidents int he beginning, but no actual choking.

Basically, it's all personal preference IMO.

Of course, I apply my common sense and pay attention when she's eating. :)

I do quarter things like grapes, bananas and the rare hotdog she gets...you know stuff that is the obvious choking hazard.

  • I've read that for things that aren't super mushy or dissolve, the width of the food should be no bigger than her pinky.  But I have done them a little larger than that.  She's pretty good now though and actually prefers bigger chunks.

This too except I don't shred apples or pears I cut in small cubes. I still have not fed grapes to her. I still cut large grapes in half for my 3 year old too.

  • Thanks for the replies, ladies!

I did give her a puff size piece of watermelon and she did ok with it. She did have a little bit of "gagging" but nothing she couldn't handle. I'll keep doing it puff size and take her lead from there.
