8 week u/s baby looks good, but there is a septum

I was excited to see the healthy baby and the healthy heart beating.  Just when I was feeling all gushy, she said she needed go call in the Dr.  There is s septum in the uterus, like a long mass going into the uterus. It's not complete (sometimes it divides the uterus in half), but it's pretty big.  I go to a specialist next week for a more thorough analysis.

 It seems like the biggest fear with these is that the baby attaches to the septum and can't get enough nutrients and therefore miscarries.  That does not seem to have happened.  But there is a slew of other risks (2nd tri md, preterm labor, breech etc).  The baby just doesn't have the proper room to grow and move around. Thought I'd see if anyone has experience with this. 

I was born breech.  My mom had other 3 healthy deliveries (and 1 m/s).  So I wonder if she had this too and didn't even know it.      

I was a mess yesterday, but you can only do what you can do... I'm sad :(

    My friend has this. She was told she would most likely need a c section. Other than what you mentioned there wasn't much concern. It just makes you higher risk so they will keep a closer watch on you.

    I had a septum, which was removed last year.  There is no genetic reason behind it, its just kind of a fluke.  The biggest concern with a septum is miscarriage, which at this point there is nothing you can do to prevent.  Its good that it hasn't attached to the septum.  Its promising that you've gotten this far with it.

    There is a yahoo group about Mullarian anomolies (which a septum is)- just google it.  You will find a ton of info.  If you plan to have more children, you will probably want to have it removed at some point to make future pregnancies safer.

    My SIL hs this and has two healthy beautiful children.  Both of her kids were breech and unable to turn around so she had a c section because the doctor wouldn't do a breech delivery.

    I have a bicornuate uterus, and have had 3 healthy births thus far (praying for a fourth healthy delivery!).  I wanted to say that my first two pregnancies were scheduled c-sections (my first was breech), and there were no issues with this that I was aware of.  I was trying for a vbac with my last pregnancy, but at 40 weeks baby was discovered to be breech, so that was a no go.  At midnight at 40w1d, my water broke, and the baby did get stuck in my septum, as I was contracting around his head.  This did cause complications for getting my baby out quickly, but with proper monitoring & scheduled cesarean (if necessary), is probably avoidable.  Did your healthcare provider seem concerned?

    I haven't heard of this but at my 12 week ultrasound with LO#1 they told me I had a bicornuate (spelling?) uterus and I was freaking out until week 20 when they realized they were mistaken and there was no problem at all.  Hopefully you'll get good news at your follow up with the specialist.  Good luck!

    Thanks all.  This was very helpful and reassuring.  My doctor didn't seem very concerned, but said the specialist would be able to provide a more thorough analysis.  But I have to wait a week for that, so I'm trying to learn more about it.
