Pregnant after a Loss

Um, where is the pee going?

So, the how big is baby thing on TB says that she is a Butternut Squash this week and she is peeing about a pint a day. Where is that pee going? I can't be floating around with her in there right? It's not coming out. Why don't I know this?

  • It's floating around in there with her. But it's not pee like you or I have. It's sterile. She pees it out and "breathes" it back in. Gross I know!

Well, thats what I was wondering. I was wondering if she was drinking it. Weird. Making a baby is seriously amazing.

Exactly this AND our urine is also sterile, barring no yucky bacterial infections. :)

Yep. It weirded DH out for a little bit when I read that part to him from the Mayo Clinic Guide to a Healthy Pregnancy. Her breath didn't stink when she came out, though, at least not that I could smell ;-)

Really?! I always thought that's why it had to be boiled or filtered somehow if you were in a live or die type situation. Guess I was wrong..... There's a first for everything ;)

I actually knew the part about pee being sterile. I used to sit in an the nursery of the hospital to edit pictures and they did the circumcisions right next to me. One time a baby peed right before a doctor was going to do it. The mom, who was watching, asked if he was going to clean it and he told her it was sterile.

Actually in an emergency situation you can drink your own urine without doing anything to it.  But only do it once because if you drink it twice it can kill you. Something about the second time it is so salty from having already drank urine plus the normal salts your body is washing out dehydrates you or something?

  • Its her amniotic fluid.  Kinda grossed me out to think about it, too...but that's why its so imporant that their kidneys work on the inside because lung development (and other functions as well) depend on that fluid).  I think that as she ingests some of it the extra fluid comes back through the cord for you to get pee out yourself.

True Story: I totally blurted out, "Gee, it really does look like pee" when I saw the fluid after D's amnio.  I felt like such a dork.
