Hospital gown - WWYD?

Hi Ladies! I had my work shower last night and a couple of the girls gave me one of those "designer" hospital gowns. (This: https://www.amazon.com/Gownies-Designer-Maternity-Hospital-Gown/dp/B000WM94R6 )

It's cute and was very sweet of them, but I never would have considered getting one if I hadn't received it as a gift. I feel like since it was given to me that I should wear it, but I'm still not sure how practical it is. Won't it get ruined if I wear it during delivery? Afterwards I was planning on nursing tanks or gowns, so I'm just not sure what to do with hthis gown. It seems that it's either going to get ruined or be totally useless. Ami I missing something? Would you wear it if you were given one? If so, when would you wear it?

I realize that's a lot of questions over a really insignificant thing, so thanks if you read this far and extra thanks if you actually respond! :)

Re: Hospital gown - WWYD?

  • I would definitely wear it! So what if it gets ruined--I hate regular hospital gowns and would gladly wear a pretty or designer one if given the chance, especially if I'm going to be photographed in it before or after I give birth!

I know a lot of women on this board think they're dumb, and I probably wouldn't go to the expense of buying one (no plans to at the moment), but if I got one as a gift I'd definitely go for it. I love the one you were given and it's definitely better looking than the old scratchy faded ugly gowns that I've seen my sisters give birth in.

Think of it along the lines of the advice to bring a pretty pillowcase to the hospital. You're going to be in pictures, and it's nice to have a bit of pretty print near your face for all the close-ups rather than the standard issue white hospital cases.

All in all, definitely not a must have by anyone's standards, but nice to have!

  • I would wear it. It's not like you can return it. Plus, if you don't wear it, what are you going to do with it? It will probably just sit in your closet - so if it gets ruined in the hospital, no big deal. If it's hard to nurse in, you can always change into something else at that point.

  • What a waste of money! It's not even cute!  It's a shame they couldn't use the $ to buy you diapers. But you can't return it so use it or resell.
  • My hospital wont let you wear a gown of your own until after you have delivered and move to recovery, so check with your hospital.  Honestly I would return it and get something more practical.

  • Something I wouldn't splurge on, but would definitely wear if it was a gift and it was my style. I wouldn't worry about it getting ruined because if it does, it's not like you forked over the money for it...oh, and if you think about it, your gown will probably be pulled up above your waist during the messy part, the doctor wants access!

  • If they got it from Amazon you can definitely return it.  But, it's totally up to you.  I'd wear it.  I wore my own tank top in labor and was for more comfortable in that than I was in the hospital gown.

  • Who cares if it gets ruined, its not like it's something you'd wear at home. It's sweet gift, I'd wear it!

  • I bought 3 for my hospital stay and I loved them. I could nurse with them on I didnt have to undress for exams and didnt have to worry about anything getting wrecked because the sole point of these was for this hospital visit. I felt better about myself wearing them not so clinical and they looked way cuter in the photos

  • I would wear it right after you give birth if you like the design.  It's most likely going to get ruined, but at least it'll be in pictures for her to see (and you'll look cute - though this is not important), and then once the bleeding calms down you can move into your own clothes (I don't plan to move into nursing gown/tanks for at least a few hours after delivery).  If you don't wear it, you think they'll be hurt if they don't see it in photos?

  • As a labor nurse I will tell you 2 things. 1. many hospitals won't let you wear them so check, but 2. most labor nurses get a big laugh out of patients who wear them. Patients who wear them tend to be immediately labelled high maintenance and become the talk of the nurses station. Maybe not a reason to care, but just an FYI. Designer gowns generally come with patients who have 3 page birth plans and aromatherapy candles.
