New pedi vs. Family practice

MH and I decided after todays fiasco (long story) that we would not remain with our kids pedi. Pedi just doesn't listen, and today, told me that I was wrong. So, I called the insurance, and the only practice open taking new patients is a family practice. Does anyone have any experience with this, or any advice? TIA

Re: New pedi vs. Family practice

  • DH and I decided before our DS was born that we would be using our family practice. My personal experience has been that pedi usually go with the " 5 babies came in earlier with similar symptoms dx" and I wasn't comfortable with that . I also wanted DH to always see the same MD and be comfortable with her as he grew up. We love our family MD and she is so wonderful with him and not only does she know everything about him from day 1 she knows our family history as well. She also takes a more critical approach to everything with him, more so than other pedi we know, which if you knew DH and I that's a good thing lol We've been criticized by our friends saying a family MD isn't "good enough" but clearly they are family practicioners and therefore thoroughly trained in all family medicine. I say to pick an MD you are comfortable with family MD or pedi and go with them. But dont shy away from family MD's they can be a wonderful change

  • I grew up going to a family practice.  I didn't even realize that wasn't the norm until I was older.  I like family practices.  It makes it easier as you get older.  I'd just make sure that they are up to date on their knowledge of LOs.

  • I tried two pedis before switching DD to the NP that I see. I love my NP and since DD is healthy there isn't much to worry about. My NP is very good abut knowing her limits and will consult with her MD if she doesn't know an answer. Most of my questions are first time mom questions and don't need a pediatrician know it all but someone who has been there and has time for my silly questions. I figure if anything was worrisome I would be referred to a specialist which would be better than a pedi anyway.

  • We go to a family practice and I absolutely love it.  Our dr specializes in women's and infants/children though so I feel like we're getting the best of both worlds (family-centered care plus specialization in children).  She also doesn't hesitate to refer us out to specialists.  If you find a practice you're interested in you can always inquire about referrals and specialists and what their policy is.

Same here. We see the NP at the family practice and she has been great. I love going to her. She is very knowledgeable but knows her limitations and will consult with the doctor when she doesn't know the answer.

She is also very diligent about keeping up to date about pediatric care, unlike many pedis I hear my friends interact with. They seem stuck in their ways (just a stereotype I guess).
