What is the NT scan?

Everyone is talking about a NT scan. My midwife has never mentioned it the next time I get an u/s is 20 wks to find out the sex of the baby. What is the NT scan? When are you typically supposed to get it?

Re: What is the NT scan?

  • Its usually 11-14weeks pregnant. And its optional, you dont have to have it done. And some offices will do just blood work and some do blood work and an u/s. Most common one is they take a blood sample from you and then do an ultrasound to measure the amount of fluid in the babys back of the neck, and with these two they can help to determine your risk of baby having downs syndrome. But like i said, its optional. If you are interested in it, just ask your midwife for more info

  • If you declined the quad, then why would you do the NT?

  • like any test...if you arent sure what it is, let alone if you want it, you should talk to your doc. They can let you know all about the test and if its beneficial to you (if you have a family history, for ex, your doc would know and may recommend you get it done). Talk to your ob..thats why we have em right? ;)

The quad has a very high false positive rate if it comes back positive they do more invasive testing. It just wasn't worth it, Especially because of the rate of false positives.

Sorry but your entire post is incorrect.  This test (which provides the same type of results as the NT scan) provides you with a ratio.  A likelihood.  It does not give postive/negative results.  It is up to YOU if the numbers you are provided compel you to have additional testing.  No one can make you and even if the numbers are very much not in your favor, you do not automatically have to go forward with gathering more information with additional tests.
