VBAC

so who's going to a chiropractor?

I started seeing a prenatal chiropractor who is convinced the reason DS would not drop (resulting in c/s) is becase my hips are so twisted and out of line.

It kind of makes me wonder why chiro vists aren't a standard part of prenatal care. Seems awfully important to make sure everything is straight and aligned so baby can get into the right position - no?  Just wish I had known before.

Anyone else? I'll be going weekly until I deliver. She even goes to the hospital and does adjustments while you are in labor if things aren't going so well - crazy!

Re: so who's going to a chiropractor?

  • Since 36 weeks I've been going 3 times a week.  I wish I started going sooner.  Baby #1 was a c/s because she was breech.  Big surprise - at 36 weeks baby #2 is breech.  Unfortunately baby #2 isn't turning but the chiropractor has still been helping my back pain and discomforts. If we decide to have #3 I'll definitely start going earlier and make it a weekly occurrence to try and see what I can do to help my back and put the baby in the best position.

  • Meee!  I've also wondered why prenatal chiro isn't part of standard care to prevent breech babies and encourage optimal fetal positioning... I saw one with DS, and I was hooked after the first session because he had flipped back to head down within a couple of days after.

I'm also going weekly at this point as well.  My chiro said that baby is super low (much lower than last week), so she feels pretty good that he/she will stay put.  But I'm still continuing appts until labor starts, both for positioning and because it helps with my hip pains.  Mine will also come to my house for adjustments during early labor if needed Smile

GL to you fellow August mama!

  • I started going at 17 weeks.  And yup, I agree, should be routine.  My hips were horribly twisted, and go figure, DD got stuck in my hip and was asynclitic for my first labor resulting in FTP.  I've actually been told all my adult life that one leg was shorter than the other and no one, not a trainer or a single physician suggested it might be fixed with a simple adjustment.  Guess what?  It was.  I'm going twice a week for now, trying to coax baby A to get and stay head down.

  • ugh, I wish. I went regularly during my last pregnancy, but we have new insurance now (Tricare) that doesn't cover chiro visits at all. And since I'm no longer working it's an extra expense we can't afford. But I know that doing yoga and going to the chiro was the reason I got through with minimal back pain last time.

Oddly enough, it didn't really help me with positioning - although DD was head down, she was posterior and would not descend leading to my FTP c/s. However, maybe if I had an adjustment during labor, she would have moved? hmmm...

  • I would like to go--how did you get insurance to cover?  Did you have your OB write a script?

  • I started going in the first trimester, it helped so much with the hip and sacrum pain.  Late in the third tri she did a lot more work on my hip area.  I still go once a month!

  • I went regularly through out my last pregnancy and had a successful VBAC.

  • Yep, I went to one from about 14 weeks until I gave birth with DS2. My chiropractor also offered adjustments during labor, and she did acupuncture, too. I got therapeutic massages once a week for a long time, which was really awesome.

I'm a big skeptic about chiropractics in general, but it's pretty low-intervention and our insurance covered it. I have no regrets about doing it, either.

  • The chiro I'm going to actually doesn't do ANY insurance. I might be able to submit anyways and be able to get reimbursed - will have to try. I still went with them because they are the most specialized practice in town for prenatal, and she's even allowed at my hospital to come do adjustments during labor if needed (her office is right next door to the hospital). Luckily her costs are really low - $40/visit or you can do a $200 punch card for 8 visits which takes the cost down to $25/each. She even has a deal where you can pay $1500 and go as much as you want for an entire year. She doesn't do appointments, just has open hours and sees people first come first serve - which I kind of like.
