1st Trimester

Migraines

Hi all!  I didn't plan to start posting yet since I am only 4 weeks, but today I had my first migraine in I don't even know how long.  I'd almost forgotten how unbearably miserable they can be.  I would normally have taken an Excedrin Migraine to head it off, but that obviously isn't an option.  Do any of you get migraines and have you had them while pregnant?  Now after experiencing one, I'm so nervous I will get another and would like some ideas for non-medicated relief in case there is a recurrence.  Unfortunately, if I can't lie down soon enough, that becomes a useless endeavor because I eventually start vomiting.  :(. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!  Thank you so much!

Re: Migraines

  • :(  sorry, I get them too.  my 1st pregnancy I didn't get them until closer to the end.  But with this one I already got one - around 5 weeks.  You can take tylenol while pg - I can't because I'm allergic - so hopefully that can give you some relief.  I'll also drink tons of water and a cup of full caff coffee.  I try to sleep if I can but if not, just turning all the lights down low, putting a cool cloth on my head and covering my eyes.

  • Thank you!  Tylenol has never worked for me, but I'll give it a go if it happens again and keep your other suggestions in mind!  I was so out of it, I completely forgot that caffeine helps me, so thank you for the reminder!  Hopefully we can both remain migraine free for the next 9 months!
  • Oh, my mom just also bought me some lavender oil which is supposed to help with headaches, not sure if they will help with migraines, but I'm going to check with my midwife to see if it's okay to apply to my temples or wherever and give it a try if I get another one.

  • I only have been having them this pregnancy, but the only thing that helps is a dark, quiet room with a cold, wet towel on my forehead.  Sorry, lady, I know they are terrible :(

  • Make sure you're drinking enough water, too.  When I get migraines, I chug a ton of water and it seems to help.  Migraines stink!

This.  I had horrible ones last pregnancy, but a few very rare times if I felt one coming and took Tylenol early enough, it would stop it or make it go away faster.  I'm dreading them this pregnancy (they got worse as time went on) bc DH works out of town Mon-Fri most weeks and it's just me at home with DD.  Not sure there is a quiet room with a 3 yr old in the house.

  • I had to get an RX from my Ob when pregnant with DD, I was getting migraines all the time.  It is for fioricet.  It works wonderfully.
  • I asked the exact same question (https://community.thebump.com/cs/ks/forums/thread/66764382.aspx).  I visited the baby doctor the other day, and she also recommended taking regular-strength Tylenol and Benadryl with Coke.  She mentioned a prescription medication, but I said that I'd homemake it first and see how it goes.  I usually try to lie down in a dark quite room with a cold compress on my forehead as soon as possible.  I have also figured out in the past week that if I eat about every three hours (something with protein), I don't get them.  Try staying hydrated, eating regularly (which also helps with nausea), and lots of rest.  Good luck!

  • I got a migraine about 4 days after my BFP (around where you are now). I ended up taking some Tylenol on a full stomach and some coffee for the caffeine. I still had a headache for the better part of the day, but it did eventually go away.

When I'm home (I was traveling at the time), I'll take an epsom salt bath, ice my neck and head, put arnica cream on my neck, and use biofreeze. I'd also suggest drinking green tea (it is anti-inflammatory and may help with the blood flow)

This was me too pre-pregnancy. Nothing but my prescription meds would make a migraine go away. I take hope that tylenol took care of my migraine after I got pregnant.

  • Make sure you are staying well hydrated & snacking regularly - I am also prone to migraines but have noticed that during pregnancy, even if I don't feel hungry or thirsty having a snack & glass of water can work wonders. Also, cold washcloths are great to help prevent vomiting during one.

  • I usually drink a mini Coke (I think it's 7.5 ounces) and it helps me. When I get home/if I'm already at home I hop in the shower, I only leave the closet light on so it's not too bright & sit in the tub with the shower running. This usually helps a lot!

You can take a tylenol if needed! GL

  • Thank you all so much!  I will try to be sure I'm eating more.  I didn't feel hungry when it happened, but who knows?  The pregnancy has already turned everything I'm used to about my body upside down!  :)

    Thank you again!!

This migraine hit me exactly 4 days after my BFP as well... odd!  :)
