Natural Birth

food to bring to birth center

I'm wondering what food I should bring to the birth center... they have a small kitchen, but it has no food stocked already.  My midwife also hinted that they don't keep any food except saltines and peanut butter, so I know I need to bring something for her too.  Any ideas?  She also mentioned I need to bring a small meal to eat before I can leave.  There's a dunkin donuts 2 minutes away, if it's open, I can get bagels and cream cheese for the midwife, RN, doula, etc on the way.  I thought maybe I'd bring soup for me??  Just not sure, especially because I need to make it ahead of time, so needs to be frozen or canned I guess.  Any ideas would be awesome!!!

  • I just used one of our Target gift cards that we received at the shower to stock up on Cliff Bars, Luna Bars and other high protein, high carb nutrient bars.  They all pack a good caloric punch as well ranging from 150-250 each.  We will also be bringing a few bottles of pure coconut water and some applesauce.

  • I was just coming to post this!

Ive gotten some Trader Joes coconut water pops. I figure we'll bring Cliff bars and clear juice. I'd love to freeze some fruit but can't do that too far ahead of time. It's hard when you don't know when or for how long you'll be there!

  • I ate a lot of dried fruit while in labor. It was quick, easy and I could have it chewed and swallowed before my next contraction. I am diabetic so I wanted easy, natural sugar to keep me from getting too low.

As for the meal to eat before you go home, all I know is I ate the BIGGEST Turkey BLT sandwich ever after I had DS. I hadn't had lunch meat the whole time and it finally sounded good. Maybe have your husband or doula go buy you subway or something :-)

Bagels would be nice for the Midwives...and juice/coffee.

  • That's so funny, I've been dreaming about an italian hoagie all pregnancy!!  If it's during the day, someone will HAVE to get me one!!

  • I'd pack stuff that's easy to eat with one hand (ie not soup, unless it's those campbells ones that you drink).  The smell of food when I was in labor was more than I could handle.  My contractions came on so quickly and started so close together that we were waiting on a dinner delivery order to arrive.  We placed the order before labor even started and had to leave for the birthing center just as the delivery guy showed up.  At first, I told my husband to try to eat his but I had to have him stay away from me and brush his teeth because his breath was about to make me sick :(  Lol at stopping somewhere for food.  Every labor is different and maybe you'll feel inclined/have time to kill but the last place I wanted to be was sitting in a car!  GL!

  • I am not a huge fan of processed food but get some just in case! My 1st we ran all the stoplights to get to the BC & he came pretty immediately.

Fruit cups were the best for me. I couldn't handle anything too heavy, and was really loving having something cold.

  • With my first all I wanted to eat was jello during labour, with my second, I was ravenous for eggs.

  • I took greek yogurt, coconut water, and apple sauce for labor. Postpartum my husband went out and got me an egg and cheese breakfast sandwich. I was HUNGRY!
