1st Trimester

Should I confirm with a doctor test?

Or is it OK for me to just wait until my first u/s at the end of July?  I've taken several tests and all have been positive.

Re: Should I confirm with a doctor test?

  • My OB has me come in for a "confirmation of pregnancy" appointment.

  • I was told that you can't have a false positive and so I waited until my first appointment which wasn't scheduled for another three weeks from my BFP. It was fine.
  • Many doctor's don't see their patients until around 10 weeks.  I think you're fine to wait...if you've received positives at home, you're pregnant...the hpts are just as accurate as doctors' tests.

Do whatever your doctor's office says. Some of them schedule confirmation appointments and some don't.

I had my first appointment at 6 weeks and my doctor's office does not confirm with a blood test. They trust the HPTs and will only test if there is bleeding or other complications (like not being able to find heart beat on doppler in which case they would also do an US).

You can what you are comfortable with, not just what your doctor tells you to do.  If you don't think you need confirmation, then just wait.  But, if it will make you feel better, then you can request one.

  • You're good, unless you are dying to pay a co-pay. :)  They just do a pee test with the same HPT you bought at the store.  My first appt isn't scheduled until 10 weeks, but the heartburn and nausea seem like good signs that the HPT was right. :)

  • It depends on your OB office - mine has a "confirmation" visit before the first ultrasound.  However, if you got a positive pregnancy test, I wouldn't doubt it.

    I completely agree.

I think it's totally normal to go in around week 8-10.  With my first it was week 9 and now it'll be week 8 (because of my schedule being crazy week 9). Unless there's a problem, there's really no reason to go in early.  I know the waiting is hard, but you really don't need to be seen any earlier.  After that, you will probably only be seen every month or so anyway.

If they didn't tell you to come in for an additional test, I wouldn't sweat it. I called the doctor as soon as I found out I was pregnant at 5 weeks, and they had me go for bloodwork for confirmation that same day. Then we scheduled my 8 week appointment.
