Homemade PEDIASURE /ENSURE

Hey Friends I HAVE A FRIEND  who has a 1 year old who is in need of being fattend up.  She does not want to give him pediasure or ensure because she feels its all chemicals and not natural stuff.  Her son has a mild form of Spina bifida but a closed neural tube and he needs to bulk up the problem is they they think he may be slightly sesat8ve to dairy - and GO

I know some of you had FTT issues and/or children who also needed to bulk up a bit can you send me some of you recipes or ideas so I can forward to her. I told her I would ask you all and fwd what info I can

My sisters Child has a pituitary issue and  i know for bulking her up her dr suggested full fat stuff  like heavy whipping cream for cereal and the likes but it seemed all dairy ?

so throw it at me - pm me, fb  or email me ... where ever!

Thank you

Re: Homemade PEDIASURE /ENSURE

  • Hmm, most of the stuff we did involved dairy, so I'll have to think on this. The one thing I can think of off hand is avocado, which has great fats, and olive oil. Avocado can be mashed or mixed with stuff, and add olive oil to their veggies.

  • I agree with Meegs, avocado and olive oil would be good.  Maybe try coconut oil/milk/cream too.
  • Most of my ideas involve dairy but let me check with my preemie mafia they might have some ideas.

  • coconut milk is a great choice
  • Most of my friend's ideas involved milk. Her daughter lived on 2/3 whole milk 1/3heavy whipping cream with giant spoonfuls of nesquick in it for months. Her rule was also, "If it does not have caloires it is off limits" lol. She did a lot of cheese which does not help but I know someone at daycare that put full fat pb on EVERYTHING. K also gave her daughter ranch to dip everything in. She said no juice because it really is just empty sugar/calories and milk (milk substitute) will bulk them up faster. She also had a rule that if J asked for something to eat (even if it was odd like a grilled cheese for breakfast or a random cookie) she let her eat it. While you do not want to raise a picky eater, she felt that if J was asking to eat X than she was going to give her X just so she would eat.

  • this is what one of my preemie moms with a dairy and wheat allergy said.

"Lots of olive oil (we used to fry J's hot dogs in it). we add olive oil to J's hummus.

Earth's Balance spread is a dairy free sub that you can use like butter. We put it on everything (waffles, veggies, anything you could normally put butter on).
Trader Joe's has organic soy yogurt for cheaper than anywhere else.
At Whole Foods/some grocery stores you can get coconut yogurt and kefir. If he'll drink smoothies- taht's a great way to add some bulk
Condensed coconut milk has about 500 calories/cup. You can bake with it, use it in smoothies and for a while we were just mixing it with J's milk. It's usually in the Asian food section of the grocery store and it's sold in cans.
Sweet potatoes and avacadoes are great high calorie foods that you can prepare a lot of ways.
    - mash up the avacado for guac/dip or spread it on a sandwich
-pinterest has a recipe for avacado fries but I haven't tried it yet
-sweet potatoes mashed + coconut milk are super sweet and calorie packed
-sweet potatoe fries (Alexia brand are the best) are good
-I've seen sweet potato pancakes and muffins in the store but they aren't an option for us (wheat) but might work for your friend

If I think of anything else I'll let you know....."
