Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Daycare and Being Sick

My DS is 9 months old now and has been in day care for the past 3 months. He got his very first cold 1 week after starting. He has been sick basically ever since. Ear infections in both ears that are resistant to anti biotics. He has a cough that will go away for maybe a week then it comes right back for another 2 weeks or so. Has anyone else experienced this same frustration? If so, any encouraging words? It breaks my heart to see him sick all the time, and to need to keep bringing him back to the place that I believe is making him sick.

Re: Daycare and Being Sick

  • My son has been in DC since November.  Since January he's averaging 1 ear infection a month.  It's inevitable unfortunately.  :(

If we didn't have them in DC, then once we had them start school they would get sick a lot.  I hate it too :(  Have you talked to your Pedi about possible allergies.  We went to the ENT this past week due to all his ear infections and we are trying to cut out soy and dairy to see if maybe that helps with his ear infections.  A lot of Pedi's don't really think allergies can start that early, but some kids have allergies.

I would also mention to DC that they need to hold your LO upright when they give bottles.  I know they tend to let the kids lay back in their arms and depending on the angle they are laying it can cause the liquid to get stuck in their ears and cause infections.

I don't really have any other advice, but hang in there.  I feel your pain.

  • My DS has been in daycare since mid-April (so 2-ish months?) and he basically got a cold withn 4 days.  He's just now getting over an ear infection.  My pedi (who I LOVE) told me that "daycare" is the magic world and basically keeps them in business.  He assured me that there is nothing wrong with it but that DS will most likely go between being very sick (e.g. his current ear infection/serious booger situation) to just have a little cold, then back again.

He did say (and anecdotally I have heard the same thing from all of my friends who have LOs in daycare), that you are just building up their immunities and after the first year or so they will be sick much less.  My co-worker has a 4 year old daughter who has been in daycare since she was 3 months old.  She's NEVER sick anymore.  My other friend has a kid who finished kindergarten (so he's about 5).  She is a SAHM and this was his first real exposure to other kids on a daily basis.  She said he was sick at least once every 6 weeks and she had to keep him home.

So the Cliff's Notes version of this long story is that it will get better.  And in the long run it will be hugely beneficial as you won't have a school-aged kid that is home all the time!

  • Unfortunately it happens. My son has been in daycare since November and since then he has had the following:

    Bacterial Meningitis(included a 10 day hospital visit)

7 ear infections(had to have surgery to insert tubes)

    Bronchitis-twice

    Stomach virus-twice

    Constant cough, runny nose

you name it my son has had it!! My son has stayed sick since the meningitis. He catches everything that goes around in that daycare. Also doesn't help that our daycare lets the older kids come in and out of the baby rooms playing and touching the babies so the older kids are easily spreading the germs to the babies.

I hate my son being in daycare and I am desperately trying to find another place for him in our town but there are only 2 other places and they have waiting lists(most of which include families from the daycare my son is at)

  • This happened with us too.  DD didn't go to daycare until she was 2 and she was never sick prior.  We always assumed it was because I nursed for a year.  But then she started daycare and has been sick on and off since September.  DS started when he was 8 weeks old and has had 2 year infections, the flu, and a constant cold since then.

They are just getting past that stage since it has almost been a year.  However, I think another thing that helped was that we discovered DS was allergic to eggs and dairy.  By cutting that out of his diet and mine, I think we are taking that stress off his immune system so it can help combat the daily germs.
