C-sections

grooming beforehand

I have a c/s scheduled for Friday morning, and I am considering either having DH shave me with his electric razor tonight or using some Nair in shower stuff just to avoid them having to groom me in the hospital. Would this be a bad idea?

Re: grooming beforehand

  • I am not a fan of Nair personally because it irritates my skin and I hate the smell, but I don't see why shaving or waxing would be a bad idea.  I know every hospital is different but at mine they shave the area if you are not groomed already.

  • They'll still shave the area before surgery, but it won't hurt anything to do it at home.

    Shave low!

  • Can't you shave it yourself?  I would not be as comfortable with DH shaving me.  It's easier when you can feel what's being done than shaving someone else.

  • I don't shave and they have never shaved me before either (for my 2 c/s).

  • At the hospital they just shaved a little bit at the hairline.
  • I shaved before my induction and when we had to do the CS I remember the nurse saying to me "Oh, you already shaved for us. Well thank you." lol. It made me giggle.
  • I had shaved on Wed or Thursday and had a c/s early Sat morning.  I remember them looking to see the hair situation below and said I was already shaved so they wouldn't have to do that.  My sister said they'd just do a "dry shave" and I didn't want to have to deal with razor burns or ingrown hairs so I tried to stay on top of the situation.

  • You can but they will probably do it anyways. They like to make sure they do it there so the risk of infection is lower.

    Happy grooming

  • I trimmed and shaved a couple of days before surgery, and they did not shave me in the hospital. The nurse actually said something like, oh, you're good, we don't need to shave you. Lol!

wax and nair would irritate my skin. I was able to shave even thought I couldn't see it. There is now way I would trust DH with a razor there.

This was me too. I had 18 hours of labor before deciding to do a c/s. The nurse came at me with a razor then put the razor down and said "aren't you prepared for anything!". I laughed too...

  • I shaved a day or two before, but forgot before we left (it's not like could reach very well...quite the process...lol).  Anyway, they shaved for me.  Quick, painless, electric.  I wouldn't worry, they do it all the time.

  • I actually got waxed before mine so they didn't have to do any shaving.  It's the little things that make you feel better!

  • I just received my pre-op instruction packet and it specifically says in it to NOT shave beforehand.  I agree with the PP that it is probably so that they can do it and reduce the chance of infection.  They also have specific instructions about showering with a special soap from the pharmacy the night before and morning of.  With them specifing even the soap I'm using I would think that nair is way to harsh a product to have on your skin at the surgery site on your body.  If you would feel better shaving I would say go ahead but definitely don't use nair.

  • Update: I ended up using the in-shower Nair a few days before my c/s and then touched up with a razor the day before. The nurse who was supposed to shave me was happy that I had already done it, and she said I did a good job that didn't even need touched up. It did burn a bit when they wiped me down with alcohol but I think that would've happened if they shaved me too.

  • I shaved the night before and the nurse didn't have to. I said something to the effect of "uh, sorry... I was shaving blind" (I was HUUUUGE) and she said "wow, I'm impressed." Made me laugh.
