birth control

just wondering if anyone has talked with their doctor about birth control you'll be using afterwards,

i know we have time before giving birth, but just something i've been thinking about.

what do you girl's recommend for birth control?

my own experience has been the depo, and i love being on it!! i lose weight i don't ever have a period, but once i got off it and on to the pill to regulate my body for getting pregnant i gained weight and nothing i could do to stop putting back on the weight i just lost.so i'll will not be going back on that.

thanks everyone!

  • I thinking Mirena. Less to worry about. I LOVED the Nuva ring, but my migraine meds affected it.. The proof is cooking in my belly. Lol

We use condoms as birth control.  I've never had a good experience with birth control (it either makes me crazy, fat or angry).   I don't do needles, so the shot is out....   Condoms are just easier in my opinion.

    You are not alone!!!

  • In the past I?ve used BC pills (several types) and have never had any problems with them. We will not be using any after baby is born because DH will deploy when baby is about a month old, too soon to have sex. He?ll be gone until baby is about 9 months old, and I want to start trying for #2 shortly after baby #1?s first b-day (or when he?s around 15 months), so we?ll most likely just use condoms until them.
  • I am getting a depo shot then at my 6 wks I am getting Essure. This is our last... one boy, one girl.

  • Probably just condoms.  Neither I nor DH want me on hormonal BC (too much cancer in my family) and I am not interested in an IUD (too many horror stories).
  • My doc highly recommends the mirena. It's what I'll be doing for bc.

  • I've had 3 Mirena IUDs before and in-between TTC time frames.  The first two were awesome.  No complaints.  Light spotting for the first few weeks after insertion, but then no period at all until after removal.  No weight gain.  No change in mood/sex drive/etc.  The second IUD did cause a very small cyst to develop, and it expelled itself after about 10 months.  But we were only a month or two away from TTC, so it wasn't too big of a deal.

However, the third IUD (inserted at 8 weeks postpartum after DS was born) was absolutely awful.  Horrible mood swings.  Zero sex drive.  Started expelling itself again, and I had intermittent spotting every other month after insertion.  Chose to get it removed after only being in for about 8 months.  All negative side effects were gone within days of removal.

This is very likely our last baby, but I told DH I wasn't comfortable making any permanent until after I've weaned this baby from BFing.  I want to be hormone free when deciding about a tubal ligation.  That's just me.  In the meantime, we will use condoms and I'm looking into the Paraguard IUD since it has no hormones.  I've heard fairly positive experiences about it, but (like everything else) obviously everybody knows somebody that didn't like it.

I had pretty bad side effects with BC pills and the Depo shot, and I've heard awful bleeding side effects from the implantable device (Norplant, etc).  I did "OK" with NuvaRing, but I can't use that while BFing.

HTH and GL!  Sorry, I'm known for being long-winded in my replies Wink

Ha ha, this worked for us for two whole years! And when we decided to actually start trying, it only took 3 weeks until I got pregnant. Now I'm worried about going back to the old pull out method.

  • We don't plan to use anything.  It took us long enough to get pregnant with this one, and if it happened again quickly I'd be thrilled.

  • i've been on low dose hormone BCP's for nearly 10 years.  the last 4 years before we started TTC my ob had me start skipping the sugar pills due to controlling endomytriosis (sp?).  we tried the patch once too, but it had higher hormones and made me a wreck.

my OB is going to put me back on BCP's of some sort, as there is a type you can take and BF at the same time, to wait untill we decide if we're both getting fixed or trying for #2 later.

  • I used the birth control patch before getting pregnant, but I think I'd like to do some type of IUD since we don't want to try for #2 for a while.

Condoms are out. I don't know if I'm allergic or what, but they burn.

  • I was going to get Mirena...until I had a 26 year old patient whose protruded through her uterine wall, causing her to have to get a complete hysterectomy...and she hadn't had any children yet. So now, I'm not quite sure. I've been on BCPs since I was 13 and because I've had two miscarriages, that is what my doctor said it might be caused by (being on BCPs for over 10 years continuously), so I won't be doing that (and I've gotten pregnant three times on BCPs). I hate condoms. I'm at a loss!

  • My doctor is pretty strict about about only prescribing the mini-pill for breastfeeding moms (as far as hormonal bc goes). I'm pretty anti-hormones so we'll be using the rhythm method until we're ready for number three.

  • I'm pretty set on Mirena. I've used pretty much every birth control out there (including the sponge! Yes, secretly I'm Elaine from Seinfeld. Cat's out of the bag. Now everyone picture me dancing.)

*Mini pill- first thing I was ever on. Loved it until I turned 18 and my body decided to stop acknowledging it. Breakthrough bleeding left and right, etc, OB switched me to the regular pill and that shut it right up.

*Regular pill- no problems, but I'm bad about taking it perfectly. I always take it every day, but I'm crap at remembering to take it at the same TIME of day. If we do have other kids in the future, it won't be for 4-5 years, so I don't need my forgetfulness to get me KTFU

*NuvaRing- um, doesn't stay in. Yes, I inserted it correctly. Yes, I do Kegels. OB couldn't figure it out either. C'est la vie...

*Depo- never again. Got one shot, bled for 3 months straight. 3 MONTHS STRAIGHT. And yes, I do mean bleeding. And I do mean every single day. No thank you.

*Condoms- hate how they feel. Blech.

*Sponge- just...awkward. And sort of gross afterward. And hard to find. And...yeah, just not doing that again.

  • DH and I just recently talked about this. Immediately after my 1st I went on the pill and was on it for years. It REALLY messed up my cycles therefore I will not being doing that again since we mostly likely want more children. That being said, I don't have an answer. Who knows...maybe we'll just go with it and see.

LOL So glad I'm not alone in this

  • after I have LO- we will do the Micronor (sp?)- as I will be BF.  however we are 99.9% sure we are done.. (we are expecting # 4) but I dont want to make a decision while pregnant - we we will wait 6 month - 1 year before making the decision.
    lolololo
  • I was on Nuvaring before. I liked it, but at a certain point (about 6-7 months of using it) my body decided that it needed a break. Kind of like not staying put/being uncomfortable/etc. This happened to me twice.

DH hates condoms. We've used them, but he hates them. I don't really like them either, but you do what you gotta do.

I don't want any hormonal BC this time. There's another IUD that my OB was talking about. It's a flex one. There aren't any hormones, just copper. I think I'll be going with that one.

This is probably our last, but I don't want to get my tubes tied, and I told DH that he can't get the snip until this baby's 2. Just in case we change our minds about having another.

    this made me laugh:)

this also worked for us, and using the rhythm method. i really am not comfortable with hormonal birth controls. they just mess with my body too much :

i'm hoping we can use the rhythm method again, but it makes me a little nervous to know that even though i plan on breastfeeding & my cycle will most likely not resume until 6mo or so, i will ovulate before i get my first period again. eek!

  • I would never use pullout!  Why would I deprive my husband of that great part of his orgasm?!

I tried BCP, Nuva Ring and Paragard IUD.  BAD side effects with all of them.  My body expelled the IUD on its own.  I am so much healthier without those artificial hormones in me.  Barriers have never been an option for us.  We don't want a physical barrier between us when ML.

We will use NFP (which is NOT the rhythm method) and possibly after 3-6 months use nothing.  I am with a PP, it took us long enough to get pregnant with this one so I am not too concerned with postponing another.

I'm surprised that patient was given a Mirena, having not had a child yet. My understanding is that is one of the criteria for recommendation.

I'm also a little thrown as to the idea that anyone is linking BCP and m/c. My RE and MFM are pretty adamant that there is no correlation, and that seems to be the overwhelming conclusion of most fertility specialists, so I'd be really interested in what studies your doctor was basing that off of (he or she didn't happen to share them with you, did he, because I am always interested in new research into RPL).

There is no study that say there is a causal link, but there is evidence of correlation.  If you look in the Physician's Desk Reference for any hormonal BC, one of the mechanisms, though not the primary mechanism, is thinning of the endometrial lining so it becomes hostile to an already fertilized egg making it difficult (sometimes impossible) for the fertilized egg to implant properly.  For some women who have been on HBC for an extended period of time their body may have trouble recovering normal function of the endometrium and therefore *possibly* causing miscarriage.

  • I don't like hormonal BC messes with my body as well. Either makes me *itchy, gain weight, loss of sex drive, or just unbearable to be around. So for the last 1yr+ we have just charted. I know that my cycle won't get back to normal til' around 6 months since I plan on EBF, but that is what we are going to do this time around as well. Our plan is to have our kids close together so if it happens it happens and we will be thrilled when it does! Ideally it wouldn't happen til this baby is around 9 months to a year but earlier is fine by me as well.

  • I was on BC for a really long time (probably started around 13) because I was having a period every 2 weeks, and they were wicked heavy.
When I was in my fist year of college (so 2006) I was diagnosed with endo and advised that if I was anything like my mom I would struggle with pregnancy and it would be a good idea to have children before 30 or I would experience more difficulty.
I went off the pill a few years ago and DH and I strictly used condoms.
When DH and I got married in September we decided not to use anything and just let things happen naturally if they were going to. I got pregnant (clearly) and now we're having this same conversation.
I didn't have any problems or side effects with my BC at all, so I will chat with my OB and Dr regarding going back on the pill. DH and I both don't want to use condoms, we would really rather just go au natural since we were so crazy safe for so long. DH's benefits cover the cost of the pill anyway, so that makes them way cheaper than condoms.
We are going to be looking in to Natural Family Planning as well and see if we can make that happen.

  • I am really giving thought to paragaurd, because of the fact that it is hormone free. I was thinking Mirena originally, but seeing as how it has hormones I would prefer to try the hormone free option. I have seizures that are linked to high hormone, plus every time I ever tried bc, be it the pill (loestrin) the patch, or depo. I have gained 15 pounds EVERY time. Plus like pp depo gave me a 3 month solid period. The only thing I am not sure of is since we plan on trying after 15-18 months after birth I am not sure if paragaurd is worth it. I know I have read you can have it removed whenever you choose, but I am not sure. Glad I have a couple more months to think about it!

I was given the Mirena IUD by my OB before TTC for DD, so I hadn't had a child yet.  She said the main concern is with insertion.  If there is difficulty during insertion, then it's likely that they won't finish the procedure because that means there could be an increased risk of perforation.  Mine went in without complications, aside from the fact that I nearly passed out from the manual dilation of my cervix.

As for the link between BC/IUD and m/c... I've had two confirmed c/p's the first cycle after Mirena removal (1st cycle TTC for DD, and 1st cycle for this past TTC).  My OB postulated that it was from my uterine lining not having had time to rebuild its thickness in time, so that's why she typically recommends waiting one full cycle before actively TTC.  (FTR, we weren't actively TTC that first cycle as I was simply charting to confirm O and we were using condoms...).
