Trouble TTC

Menopur

I asked my RE for a different med protocol for this next cycle.  For the last three medicated cycles, Follistim has only produced one primary follicle... and two or three little ones... Always on the left side.  Am I being too jumpy, impatient, and aggressive?  MH and I are only planning to try 4 IUIs... no IVF.

I was hoping for Gonal-F... But the RN said it was the same as Follistim.  The RE said we could use Menopur - but that my husband needed to come to the next appointment for training... which made me think that it must be IM.  If it's subcutaneous, why does my husband need training to administer it?  I see it mentioned a lot in reference to IVF cycles.  Has anyone had experience with Menopur during an IUI cycle?  Pros?  Cons?  Thoughts?

I'm not really sure how to move forward right now.  I'm currently on BCPs until July due a 17mm cyst from 150IU Follistim.  I realize you can't tell me what I should or shouldn't do because it's a personal choice... But I'd really like some guiding input to help me consider my options.

Correction: I misspoke.. I've had two medicated cycles... Both included Follistim.

Re: Menopur

  • I'm on my 3rd go-round with Menopur, and I'm not sure why YH would need to be at the training. They are subq, and I do them myself in the belly.

The only bad thing about it is it burns. I go super slow to reducing the burning (another good thing about doing them yourself) and some seem worse than others, but yeh. Other than that, it's cake. Comes with an easy Q-cap for mixing, and the needle is super tiny.

I don't think asking to switch meds after 3 rounds is bad. If Follistim isn't working as well as your RE would like, then try something else. The difference is Follistim/Gonal-F is just FSH while Menopur is FSH and LH. Good luck!

  • No harm in trying Menopur and I don't see why YH needs any training unless it's about the different mixing steps. It also sounds like increasing your dose a smidge might be a good thing to hopefully get 2 mature follicles. Good luck!
