1st Trimester

How bad is your back pain?

Because mine is killing me! My lower back and hips hurt when I switch positions or walk. The other day walking upstairs was miserable and so was the grocery store. I mentioned it to my dr and she said I could use a heating pad but it gets way too hot, even on low. I'm barely 11 weeks and can hardly stand the pain. I'm scared it's going to get worse. If you had the same thing, did it get better or worse over time? They told me they could give me a physical therapy referral but I hadn't wanted to do that yet, although I might have to soon. I feel like it's way too early to hurt this bad.

Re: How bad is your back pain?

  • I've had some occasional lower back pain, very very low, like tailbone area. It isn't unbearable though, kind of comes and goes. I've heard of lots of pregnant women visiting chiropractors though, maybe that could help?

  • Mine has been really bad, I wasn't sure if it is pregnancy related or not.  My pain is from my mid back to tail bone.  I wish I had advice for making it better, but I am working on that.

  • With DS I had lower back pain throughout the 1st trimester. I had to take Tylenol often and it would get quite painful. Yours sounds worse than mine was but it did go away, eventually. Hope you feel better soon

Mine has hurt a lot in the past week especially when I am lying in bed. It does not make for a great nights sleep! I am definitely getting a pregnancy pillow soon.

  • I threw my back out a month ago before we got pregnant and have been to the chiropractor 12 times since trying to keep my lumbars and hip joints in alignment.  I didn't have this with either of my first two, and my second weighed almost 12 pounds.  The last week carrying him was damn near unbearable.  I'm terrified I'm going to be an invalid by the time I have this baby.  I'm visiting the chiropractor once a week right now and will probably continue until baby is born (yeah, quite the expensive habit, but better than narcotics).

  • I have a lot of pain all over because of fibromyalgia but I see a chiropractor and that helps with some of the back and knee pain. Could you try it? I've been going for about 4 years and it really is helpful.

  • I would like to try the chiropractor, but I heard once you go to the chiro you have to keep going back to feel "normal", it that true? I did a prenatal pilates workout today that focus on flexibility and some of them felt soooooo good on my hips and pelvis, so I'm thinking a physical therapist could help if it gets worse. I was also thinking about a prenatal massage, to see if that would help. Thanks for the tips guys!

This is me and I'm only about 4 weeks along. For me it was unlike any other backpain I had before, like it radiated from my tailbone. However, in the past few days it's begun to dissapate.

I would seriously recommend seeing a chiropractor. A good one can work wonders! Mine actually specialized in pregnant women and children.

  • I go to the Chiropractor once a week.  I went before I was pregnant also.  I still get some back pain, but think it is more muscle pain now.

I actually go to The Joint in the Arboretum.  Your first visit is $19, so you aren't spending alot of money if you don't like it.  I have a membership where I pay $49 a month for 4 visits, so it is actually less than my co-pay with insurance.

They don't do x-rays so some may be a little nervous about going.  I've been going to a chiropractor off and on for years, so I was already aware of what x-rays would say.

It has helped with my lower back pain and I haven't had a headache is almost 2 months!!!

It's not true, but once you feel the relief and your back feels awesome you go because you want to feel good! We go to the dentist regularly, we tune up our cars regularly, yet the one part of our body that works hard everyday is neglected.

I love my chiro, I actually have an appointment with her today and she is one of the first to find out I'm expecting. I'm excited to have her on my team as I start the pregnancy journey!

That's a good point. The chiro that my mom goes to does massages for like 20 bucks... I bet massages from chiropractors are really good.

  • I only went to prenatal yoga class a few times, but soem of the exercises really helped. In particular....stand up against the wall with your knees slightly bent and feet away from the wall....make sure your back is completely straight. This really helped me when i had back pain last time...your posture/spine gets messed up wtih the extra weight in front of you...this helped me to straighten up.
  • Lurking over here... But yes it is normal to have back pain starting the later weeks of the first tri. All those ligaments are loosening up and the muscles are tying to figure put how to support everything still. I know it sounds weird since it hurts at first, but LOTS of walking helps more than you know. It helps strengthen and realign everything that is "out of place" and hurting. Plus, tylenol and ice packs during the day can help.
