1st Trimester

question about a spa treatment

I just found out I'm pregnant, 4 weeks along.  I am going to Mexico mid-July and am set to get a cellulite reduction/slimming treatment wrap right before I go, but now that I found out I'm pregnant I don't know if I should still do it.  I called the spa and they said it was still okay, but I just don't know.  Can anyone help me with this?

Re: question about a spa treatment

  • I would call your doctor. The Nurse should be able to tell you if it is ok or not.

  • I am an esthetician and i wouldn't do a wrap on someone who is pregnant for several reasons.  1. Wraps elevate the body temp which if you got too hot could be unsafe for baby. 2. You lose water weight, that is how it "slims". 3. They can contain ingredients that aren't safe for a baby and since the product would be sitting on your skin for an extended period of time you will absorb whatever they put on you.  I would err on the side of caution.  :)

  • I doubt it's safe but I'd call the OB if I were you.

Great information! I would NOT do it.

  • I would agree to not do it. I had several spa appointments booked for my recent honeymoon and just had to switch some things around to make sure I was getting safe treatments. Some spas won't even do massages if you are in your first trimester. Luckily the spa I was at had prenatal specialists.

Good luck! I am sure you can find something that is safe and relaxing!

  • I'd go with the OB's recommendation on that one.

  • No spa treatments involving heat (which is ALL wraps) during pregnancy.  It never ceases to amaze me that people seem to understand they aren't supposed to get in a hot batch will cocoon themselves without a second thought.  Ask your doctor about which spa treatments are ok for you.
