Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

when are babies allowed/suggested to try the following foods?

Re: when are babies allowed/suggested to try the following foods?

  • We were allowed to do everything except peanut butter at our one year appt.  our pedi prefers 18 months for nuts.  I know a lot of other doctors out there that would give the okay earlier than that though.

  • DD had all of those by her first bday. We also have peanut allergies in the family.

  • Chloe had all of those by 7 months old.  The only thing she still hasn't had is shellfish (although I think she may have had a little crab the other day).  We just make sure she doesn't try new foods when we are on vacation.

  • I never asked my pedi about it.  I used the website PP mentioned for some reference.

L had sushi when he was 7 months old.  He started peanut butter after 12 months, same with chocolate.  There aren't any food allergies in our family, so I wasn't too concerned.

  • Our pedi said 2 years for peanut butter.  I know he isn't supposed to have shellfish yet but I don't know what age she said for that.  She's never said anything about chocolate, DS has had small tastes of it probably starting around a year.

  • Everyone's pediatrician will have a different viewpoint on this.  Some say to wait to avoid allergies, some say to give it early to avoid allergies.  I think the general rule is they are all okay after a year if you have no history of allergy to it in your family.  That said, we went ahead and gave LO peanut butter at a year (against our pedi reccomendation of 3 years!) and turns out he is severely allergic to it, and ended up with an epi pen in the end of the peanut butter saga!  Whenever you decide to give them, I would suggest having a bottle of children's benedryl nearby just in case!

  • My pediatrician said 3 for nuts and fish. Apa new recommendation is there is No benefit to waiting and I went against pedi and gave pb around ten months, fish around a year ( no shellfish yet) and she occasionally snags chocolate chip cookies from grandma. I think milk chocolate in small amt is ok, dark might have too much caffeine.

DS has had everything after turning 1 (except honey). For a snack I'll give him a huge spoonful of peanut that he DEMOLISHES! It's pretty adorable.

  • We did peanut butter and fish early on. But I was always told to only give peanut butter on toast or something, never just on a spoon because it's a choking hazard.
