would you fire your hairdresser?

So I went to get a partial highlight last week. It had been about 8 weeks since I had been and I had about 3/4 inch of roots showing.

I did not get a blow out, mainly because I got a last minute appointment and there wasn't time.

So I didn't really see the final result until I got home. And I still have a very distinctive 3/4 inch root at my part. It has a few blonde streaks cutting through it - but overall you can still very much see where my natural color was and the highlights did NOT blend it in.

I sent her a facebook message about it and she asked if I could stop in so she could see. I did. She said that I just had SO MUCH natural color that her highlights couldn't cover it up. It's not that they didn't take, because you can see a few streaks cutting through the roots here and there (like little stripes of blond hair cutting through the brownish rectangle of roots).  She says we should probably add in some low lights to blend it.

She did not offer to do this for free. Pretty sure she expects me to make another appointment and pay full price. I have a problem with this because I am pretty sure the cost of a highlight/lowlight is only slightly more (like an additional $10-$20 for a 2nd color), not double the price. And I think if this is her area of expertise she should have known what would have been needed to give me teh color I wanted. I showed her pictures and stuff before we got started.

If I have to pay full price again (and higlights aren't cheap - it was like $150), I am thinking of going somewhere else.

Would you?

  • Go get a 2nd opinion and if you think she's trying to screw you, change salons.

  • I would talk to the manager of the salon - if the hairdresser screwed up, they should fix it at no fee.  If they are unwilling to do so, I would go elsewhere.

  • Pregnancy does weird things to the hair.  But I do think she should have worked with you.  How long have you been going to her?  I feel like I am married to my hair color guy.

  • As a person who has gotten blonde highlights for about 10 years now, that totally sounds like she didn't do the job correctly.  However, I also agree with another poster that pregnancy does weird things to color.  I did highlights three times over my last pregnancy, and sometimes they turned a darker color - but the color did take though so it doesn't sound like what happened to you.  I would discuss with a manager to see if they will redo it for free.

It looks like total SH-T, am I wrong?

  • I'm a hairstylist, and it sounds to me like she just didn't put in enough highlights. I would strongly not advise getting low-lights, all that will do is add more darkness to your roots. (this to me is the lazy way of fixing what she failed to do the first time, and making you think she's fixing it). My professional advice, would be to go back and ask to see the manager/owner if she still refuses to correct it for free. And if you're not comfortable with seeing the same stylist, ask for someone else. This is completely acceptable provided the salon is commission and not rental (where the stylists are basically in business for themselves, in which case the owner is really the only one who should take the hit of doing it for free if you see someone else.) If they continue to disagree with you on this, change salons, not forgetting to let them know the reason they are loosing a valued client. But seriously, do NOT pay again at the same salon - you're better off spending your money at a different salon with higher standards.

I meant to mention in the earlier reply - Quite true, pregnancy hormones do do wierd things to your hair, however for a standard highlight, bleach is bleach, and that basically just cuts through everything. If she used a high-lift color, this could contribute to the color tone problem, but to me sounds like her placement and quantitiy was the issue.

Looks like she didn't do enough and nor did she even try to blend them a little.  Streaky.  I would either ask to do it again for free to ask for money back.

Sorry, I just saw this pic after I posted...she effed up. Go somewhere else. Sorry, I don't want to make you feel bad, Tongue Tied but your concerns are valid.

  • Yeah, I know she did - and I'm pissed off she won't seem to take responsibility for doing anything wrong. It's SO jacked up looking. The only reason I halfway want to give her a chance to fix it is because I don't want to pay for this again. It's a struggle enough choking up the $150 to get it done every 2 months so to do it twice HURTS.

  • You must live in a big city. I just got my roots touched up today and it was $40. Color or highlights with trim and styling is usually $50-$60. And sorry, but my hair looks way better than the mess that yours is right now. It's not your fault she screwed up your hair. Make her redo it or go somewhere else.
