Multi-doctor practice and delivery

With DS the practice I attended had about 12 doctors and I saw most of them during my pregnancy. My "primary" doctor I saw for my first appointment and my 20 week appointment and that was it. I had my 6 week follow up appointment with the woman who delivered my son.

My new practice also has about 12 doctors, but I will only see my primary doctor for my entire pregnancy (maybe a PA a couple times). My doctor said we could go over a birth plan to make sure the new doctor knew our wishes. If I am induced or have a C-section he would do those.

At first this seems strange but then it makes sense I guess that the same person will monitor my entire pregnancy as opposed to having several people... and having to explain things several times...

It might be a bit strange to have someone I never met deliver this baby but really if they do their job I don't think I will care?

Does anyone else go to a place that does it like my new place? Or how does  your practice do it?

Re: Multi-doctor practice and delivery

  • My last OB was in a big practice.  They had you see the same doctor every time, until the last two months when you started practically living there.  Then they had you rotate around so you could meet all the doctors.  Whoever was on call at the hospital the day you went into labor was who would be delivering your baby, so they wanted you to be comfortable with all of them.  My primary doctor was actually due the same day as me!  She went into labor early, so I had a different primary doctor towards the end and that was who ended up giving me a csection.

This time I have one OB, who is in private practice with no other doctors, so he's my guy no matter what!  He better not decide to go on vacation and my life end up like that movie, Knocked Up. :)

  • Did you ask what percentage of his patients he actually delivers? Mine is a multi partner practice with other OBs at the hospital. My OB delivers 98% of his patients. For DS he was supposed to leave at 5pm and he actually stayed untill I deliver at 10:39pm and I was his only patient there. He prides himself on delievering his own patients.

  • With my first pregnancy, I rotated through all the docs in the practice because whomever was on call when I went into labor was the one who delivered. It turned out fine, though, because the labor nurses seemed to do most of the work. The doc was basically just there to catch the kid. ;)

At our new place, I will see the same one doc for all my appointments as possible, and then if I go in labor during regular office hours, she'll deliver. If it's after hours, she'll do her best to be there. The only time she can't is if she can't get someone, like her husband, to watch their two kids. She said she makes it to 80% of her patients' deliveries, which sounds great to me.

  • The office I go to tries to make sure you see the same doctor throughout your pregnancy. I enjoy this because I feel like the level of care is more personal during my prenatal visits and I don't have to "catch my doctor up" on what happened at my last visit (even if it is in the chart, in my experience I still end up explaining what happened last visit).

I did have the experience where my OB wasn't available for the birth of my son. At first the idea that some guy who I never met before was going to deliver my child. But in the end it didn't really matter so much since the nurse was the one who stayed with me during most of my labor; he really just popped on occasionally to check my progress and when it was time to deliver.

  • At my practice you see one primary doctor (I think they send you to the PA or NP a few times as well for some basic appointments).  My dr ended up going into early labor and I got switched to a different dr with my son about a month before I delivered.  And a 3rd doctor was on call the night I went into labor and did my csection.  All the doctors were great.  This time around my dr swears she wont be pregnant and will do everything she can to be at my delivery.

  • You ladies make valid points. The nurse does all of the work and it's not like you met them before hand!!! And good call on asking what percentage he does deliver!

  • Man..there's not even 12 obs in our city. We have two.

Ah hell who am I kidding? My city though technically a "city" is a very small town really. We just have a Honda plant that makes us fancy enough to be called a "city".

Anyways, my mom works at the hospital in my town so I know all the doctors in my town. I love love LOOOOOOOOVE my OB. He works with another OB who, quite frankly, I'm not a big fan of...I like him just fine as a person, but as a patient/doctor, we wouldn't jive. He'd tell you that, too, I'm sure. My OB knows this and while, I trust the other dr in a case where it's an emergency or my OB is OOT, but other than that, my OB is my choice.

With my two previous pregnancies, I was going to have my OB deliver me anyways because my original doctor (a GP) told me that I'd HAVE to have a C-section because of my height. (Um, excuse me?) So she wrote me off to the OB without even checking me. True story. Hence why I have my OB now.

Wow, that was long winded sorry!

  • I'm at a place similar to your new practice. I see the same doc the whole pregnancy, and if I deliver during a weekday she will try her hardest to deliver me, but there are never any guarantees. She wasn't able to deliver dd and I had a doc I'd never met, but at that point I didn't care and she was really great anyway.
