Crib sleep struggle

My DS will be 6 weeks tomorrow. I am very frustrated trying to get him to sleep in his crib. We have put him in there from the beginning for nights. He takes naps time to time on me or in his swing. The last week or so have been the worst - he will wake up within 15 minutes of me putting him down or he will stay down 2-3 hrs max. This goes for naps or night time.

We swaddle him, I rock him to a deep sleep, he is full and changed. I have a fan on for white noise. It takes me up to 1.5 hrs to get him down because he fights it.

Any thoughts? He and I are both exhausted.

Thanks

  • I am having similar issues. When DD does not fall asleep in the crib or wakes up, I end up putting her on the rock n play. It works!

  • Naps, I've got nothing because LO won't sleep longer than 20 minutes anywhere but at bed time maybe you've missed the window and he is overtired? Not sure what time you put him to bed but try doing it earlier and see if there is a difference.

  • I went through this for about a month and then eventually ended up sleepwalking my butt into BRU and buying a Rock-n-Play. Some nights I get lucky and get a 3-5 hour stretch in the RnP, but mostly he is still up every 2 hours at night. We do sort of like a "dream feed" and he goes right back down. It's the only way both of us have been getting any sleep. He still occaisionally naps in his crib during the day and I got a crib wedge for it so that he sleeps on an incline, and that seems to be helping him stay there longer. I was told that they get better with the crib as they get older, especially when they can respond to light up crib monitors and mobiles that make it fun for them to be in there. He's 10 weeks now and I'm dreading the day when he outgrows his RnP but he is doing better in the crib lately so that's a good sign!

  • LO is 3 weeks has no trouble sleeping in his crib, however, we are using a travel crib right now because I want LO in our room. He hates the travel crib. He can only sleep in there when he is already completely asleep. He may even wake up  from a deep sleep once in there. Anyway, he sleeps so well in his RNP, so I have been putting him in there until he is ready to sleep in his own room in his crib.
  • What works for my family is using the crib as a place to put toys and crap. It is absolutely useless to us as far as sleep goes. We practice safe co sleeping and bedsharing. We've all slept through the night since day 3 with both of my kiddos. Sleep is a biological need, but how we expect babies to sleep is largely cultural. You could do some research (Dr. Sears is a great place to start) and if you are able to let go of cultural expectations, co sleeping really rocks. If I have more kids, I won't do it any other way. I am a beast if I don't get enough sleep at night, and so are my kids! I have absolutely no crib advice though, sorry you are going through a rough patch, mama!

  • So all of a sudden your DS is fighting it? Or did they always not want to go down in the crib?

My DD fought it about a week ago. I put white noise next to the crib (iPhone app) and just kept up with the rocking. After a few days she went back to going down like normal. She was having a growth spurt.

  • He has never been a huge fan of the crib but it is by far worse lately. We are going to try the iPhone app tonight.

I think he is on the tail end of the 6 week growth spurt as well.

I really HOPE this gets better soon, I would prefer to not go to the RNP unless I have to pick one up - then we just have to transition later.
