Small bites

DS would eat any kind of table food, but I have to cut up small pieces. He does not have a concept of taking bites out of a bigger piece. As this is my first LO, I am not sure if this is normal and if I can do something about it. Any advice would be grately appreciated.

Re: Small bites

  • My DS used to take bites out of cooked squash or sweet potato but he doesn't any more.  He is just too excited about the food!  Sometimes if he is getting fuller he will take a bite off of a long piece I give him.  I guess I don't have much advice to offer other than I think it is normal and give him small pieces of food at every meal but also some bigger ones that you know are soft.  Sometimes when I give him a big piece of sweet potato he will put the whole thing in his mouth so I know to stop giving him big pieces with that meal.

  • I never really thought about it, but I guess mine does take bites.  I give her stick shapes a lot that she can't fit into her mouth.  I break string cheese in half and she gums little bites off, or I cut carrot stucks in half and roast them- she will pick up the whole 1/2 carrot and bite off little pieces.  I also cut her grilled cheese into strips or triangles and she'll pull pieces apart.  Otherwise she gets mostly things that are already small shapes.

ETA: What I meant about stick shapes not fitting in her mouth is they are too long.  I started cutting food that way before she could pick up small things, and I guess I still do even though she can pick up small bites now.  Sorry- just wanted to clarify!
