1st Trimester

difficulty swallowing/dysphagia in 1st tri? anyone else?

This happened with my first pregnancy last year....started today again with this one....

I feel the food sitting in my throat and a little pressure...I gag a lot with this going on...literally the crackers and little bit or mexican rice I had this morning..just sitting in my throat it feels like...dr thinks it could be the zofran or just that since progesterone relaxes muscles (ute for stretching....also affects colon/intestines which=constipation which I have...) she thinks it might also affect my throat too?? total question mark but it feels GROSS....I finally feel a little better to eat and now food is sitting in my throat....bleeccchhh!!

anyone else feel this?

  • I don't feel that way with this pregnancy so far, but I did with dd. The only thing that helped me was to drink a little Pepsi after I ate. I also had to drink it to take my vitamin. Hope you feel better soon!

  • I actually felt that just yesterday and thought it was totally weird. No matter how much I drank i just felt like there was something stuck in my throat. Its gone away today but I plan on talking to my midwife about it at tomorrow apt.

  • I feel like this, too. It happened when I took tylenol the other day and I threw it up. It' disgusting. I am taking Zofran so maybe it is related... Still, totally worth it. I love my zofran.
  • Interesting.  I am a speech path and I had not heard of pregnancy related dysphagia before.  I guess I'll go have to pull out my books and look that up! :)

ETA: Also, if you feel things sitting in your throat, try alternating bites of food with sips of cold lemonade or lemon ice from the freezer.  The cold + sour taste helps give the nerves a little sensory kick that helps to initiate your pharyngeal swallow.

my doctor didnt officially diagnose me with dysphagia she just was trying to think of what could cause the difficulty with swallowing and food getting stuck there...when I was trying to describe what it felt like she mentioned it sounded like dysphagia but it wasnt something she has diagnosed before...although she has seen studies of it linked to zofran....

thank you for the tips!! I have tried everything...small bits...soft foods..cold drinks..carbonated drinks...hot drinks..ughhh it feels so gross and that makes me throw up more than the nausea! I end up throwin up food that never went down...sometimes I choke (ewww)....last pregnancy I had it until I miscarried it was awful :(

  • reflux can cause a globus sensation, or feeling of fullness, in the throat. Since reflux and slowed gastric emptying are more common in pregnancy it could be the issue. Since becoming pregnant my reflux is definitely worse. I don't feel "heartburn" but I clear my throat often after eating and I have more of a bitter taste in my mouth when I wake up, both are signs of reflux. However, if the food never made it to the esophagus to begin with it's a mystery to me... I can't think of why being pregnant would cause a true dysphagia more than just a hypersensitive gag reflex. Good luck and I hope you get some relief!

  • I have something similar even when not pg.  If I eat rice or anything dry or bready without a drink it gets caught in my esophagus and occasionally I've had to throw it up.  I was supposed to go for a scope but I put it off since I was ttgp, so I never really got an answer about.  Now I'm just super-vigilant to always have a big drink available with my food. GL!
