Eating an ounce & falling back asleep?

So DD woke up about 1/2 an hour ago & I started feeding her (she's FF). I pulled the bottle out after a few minutes to see how much she'd ate. It was only an ounce. She had fallen back asleep while eating & I couldn't get her to wake up enough to continue eating. I tried to burp her figuring that would help wake her up. She wouldn't burp at all. So I laid her back down thinking she'd be back up in a few minutes.

About 2 or 3 minutes later she was up & crying so I started feeding her again. She ate another ounce & had fallen back asleep so I tried to burp her again (we normally burp her about every 2 ounces). Could not get her to burp to save my life! I put her in the bouncy seat & she's still asleep. I swear she is such a monster!

Does anyone have any 'tricks' they use to wake their LO up so they'll continue to eat?

Re: Eating an ounce & falling back asleep?

  • My little guy does this when I BF. I tickle his neck, blow in his face, squeeze his feet. I will sit him up and give him kisses or try and burp him. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. It is frustrating!

  • This has happened with our daughter. If all else fails, the doctor recommended we undress her and she wakes up instantly since it makes her cold.

  • It is possible that LO isn't actually hungry and just wants some oral comforting.  Try substituting a pacifier instead.  She'll probably suck on it for about 10 minutes and then it will fall out when she's done with that sucking energy.  Doesn't hurt to try.

  • The only technique that works for me is to massage my daughter's ear as she starts to snooze. I learned that from a nurse in the hospital and it works most of the time. Good luck

  • I change her diaper midway through to wake her up.

  • I actually did change her diaper & it didn't help. It took her 1 & 1/2 to 2 hours to finish 4 ounces. Still had trouble burping her. She went to sleep. Kept fussing. I tried giving her the paci & anytime I'd lay her down she's start fussing again. I guess she was just in one of those moods. Then the last time she started fussing again (before I went & woke DH up) I picked her up, tried giving her the paci & she wouldn't have it. I took the paci out & she just spewed. But then apparently she felt better after that because she went back to sleep (but then woke back up I guess after I handed her off to DH). I really felt bad about her getting sick but I seriously couldn't get her to burp more than once. Which she let out a real good burp after that!
