Paleo

I am thinking about it. I'm a fat ass, have already cut out dairy (okay, except when I cheat with cheese. And sometimes Starbucks) and think I should probably cut out bread too. I know, the horror.

I can't imagine any of my gals here have stooped to such levels, but I felt compelled to share. Mostly because I have a day off, and I can't think of anything I would rather do. Or rather, I can't seem to motivate off my ass. Probably another reason I am fat.

Re: Paleo

  • A teacher I work with did it and she said while she didn't drop a lot of pounds, she felt AMAZING.

Check out Pinterest, I'd bet there are tons of awesome recipes.  GOOD LUCK

  • I'm not on the paleo diet, but I'm dairy and soy free so I can keep bf'ing DD2. So I mostly eat whole foods and can only eat a few processed foods since dairy and soy are in just about everything. I do think it's a very healthy way to eat. We are meant to eat whole foods instead of processed crap with synthetic ingredients. The countries with the lowest cancer rates, etc are places where they eat real food instead of packaged convenience foods. I think the hardest part about a diet like paleo is the meal planning and prep. In the past, I didn't worry about planning meals cause there was always frozen pizza or frozen entrees to fall back on. Now, if I don't plan ahead, I end up eating oatmeal for dinner. It's also hard to find time to cook some nights. I've taken to using my crockpot a lot, but that's not the best option when it's 105 degrees outside! I will say, overall, I feel better since cutting out most processed foods. I had headaches at first, which I think were caused by sugar withdrawal (I used to eat a lot of sweets throughout the day). But now, I have more energy and fewer stomach aches. I have lost weight and some days it seems like a struggle to eat *enough* calories to maintain a healthy weight, so that's something to be careful about. You don't want your body to go into starvation mode and do more harm than good. Another plus, is I've learned new recipes. I also, generally don't crave junk anymore. I would love a DQ Blizzard though. :) Anyway, that's been my experience following a restricted diet. It can be very hard to stick with, especially given the time it takes to make stuff from scratch. I would make gradual changes if you decide to try it out, cause it was quite hard (for me, anyway) to completely change how I ate overnight. Good luck and keep us posted!

  • H and I tried it. I lost weight. For me it was hard because we end up doing so many family functions here. It's much easier if you are mostly staying home/not eating out. The alcohol was hard to give up, as was giving up grains. But we stuck to it for a short while. I felt good!

  • There are quite a few people on the cystic fibrosis forums who eat this way and rave about the positive impacts it has had on their health. It has influence me to make modifications to my diet, but I haven't been able to give up cheese or sweets yet.

  • I think the hardest part is the grain (duh, esp since I've already kinda given up dairy). No more sandwiches!!! No more toast! No more s'mores! Crying

I've heard a lot of stories about how awesome you feel, how much energy you have, even distance runners that said it improved their times and running! I need to do it. I have a feeling I will keep putting it off though LOL
