NBR: dogs w/ HGE, or chicken allergies- questions!

(I already posted on Pets on TN, too)

Cliffnotes version of a long story- the dog we adopted 6 months ago pukes often. Randomly, usually acts fine right after, and it would be just one puke and he's done. I'd say he pukes 2x a month. (which is a lot to me, considering our other dog has maybe puked 2x in 3 years).

Well after another bad episode (there have been two bad episodes) of all night pukes/diareha that turned bloody, we found ourselves back at the vet only to find out they think he either has HGE, (Hemorrhagic GastroEnteritis) or he's allergic to the chicken in the food we feed. Blood was drawn, and although there's no way to officialy diagnose HGE, they don't think it's that due to some certain cells/enzymes being normal, and having a high number of that cell/enzyme is usually an indicator of HGE.

So now we're starting to switch over to a new food. The vet recommended a Salmon based food.  He gave us a starter bag of Science Diet potato and salmon, but said he doesn't have to stay on Science Diet, as long as it's a good salmon based food.

So my questions

1) Does anyone have experience w a dog w/ HGE? They don't think it's that, but if you have any experience/advice regarding HGE, I'd like to hear it.

2) What salmon food do you recommend?

  • We never had our dog tested but she always had horrible diahrea and after being put on science diet and a prescription for diahrea when she was really small and becoming dehydrated and it returned after the meds were done we took it upon ourselves to switch foods and went through a couple kinds when the pet store suggested it could be the chicken.  We bought Purina ONE Lamb and Rice and she has been great ever since.   I avoid anything with chicken now and all is well.

  • I don't have any insight on the HGE but both of our girls have food allergies.  Science Diet actually isn't a very high quality food so I'm glad you're open to switching.  We feed our girls Acana Pacifica (fish protein) due to their allergies (corn, chicken).  Check out www.dogfoodanalysis.com for a high quality food with the ingredients you need.

  • We have 2 dogs and one of them just randomly started throwing up several times a week.  It was alarming because our other dog has maybe thrown up twice in his life.  We didn't go through all the blood work because I thought he might have developed an allergy (a friends dog had just been through something similar) so we just switched to a lamb & rice food - Purina One (I think) and he has been fine ever since.

  • My dog doesn't have HGE, but he's allergic to everything!  We had him allergy tested and we now give him a shot of allergy serum once a month, and feed him a restricted diet.  He's not on salmon food, but his source of protein in his food is duck.  There are lots of alternative protein sources to chicken, so you could try something other than salmon, too.  My dog Jack is on *** Van Pattens Natural Balance Duck and Potato formula.  It's not sold everywhere but you can usually find it at feed stores.  Blue Buffalo is a more known brand that you can find at most pet stores, but it's really expensive (and the natural balance isn't cheap either, but it's more affordable than Blue)  I also did research online on natural methods for treating dog allergies, and I also supplement their diet with fish oil(omega 3's) which is good for skin allergies.  I know your dog doesn't have skin reactions, but their might be some vitamin or supplement that would be more specific to his problems.  I really hope he's feeling better soon!
  • Sorry to hear you're going through this. I have a dog with HGE. He was actually just asked to participate in a Cornell study! In our case, we were able to diagnose the cause of the problem, an embedded ecoli infection of the large intestine, through an endoscopy. All other tests came back normal. If it's within your means, I recommend it. In terms of food, we've had good luck with Fromms. They have a whitefish and potato recipe, as well as a lot of novel protein options. Our guys also do well on rabbit, but that's harder to find. I would also highly suggest a pre and probiotic if you're not using one already. Feel free to PM me if you want more info on our experiences...our little rescue was a pretty extreme case who's doing awesome now!

  • We had to switch our dogs food early this year because she developed an allergy to chicken and beef.

We mix two different Blue Buffalo Basics:  Salmon and Turkey

Fish helps with allergies, which is probably why your vet recommended it.  We use the turkey too because I'm just not sure about feeding them a diet of only fish. Both dogs like it and have adjusted well.

  • My dog has a chicken and corn allergy and is on Taste of the Wild Pacific Stream. It is a wonderful grain free Salmon based food. The problem with dogs with protein allergies is that that is not typically all they are allergic to. It is a wonderful dog food, and they require less food to get the nutrients and they poop less too. I would not feed my dogs Science Diet. For a vet endorsed food it is no better (ingredients wise) than Purina that you can get at walmart. If you have any other questions feel free to PM me.
