Trying to Get Pregnant

GYN Visit

I'm going to my GYN tomorrow for my annual. Should I mention that I've been TTC? (I'm on my 7th cycle). I'm always nervous with this stuff because I'm so young (22) I'm afraid she's not going to take me seriously and I don't really want her to tell me to just take prenatals and keep trying. DH thinks I shouldn't mention it because "It'll happen when the time is right"! That just gets me pissed off Confused

Not to mention I've been feeling nauseous when I eat. It feels as if I ate my food too fast but I've learned from this board not too take early symptoms too serious. TIA

Re: GYN Visit

  • Wouldn't hurt, though most won't recommend more specific testing until you've been trying a year or more without success.  I never mentioned it to mine. Until then, I would recommend charting (read Taking Control of Your Fertility) and visiting fertilityfriend.com so you have more specific information for your doctor.

  • It doesn't hurt to mention it but other than taking prenatals, there isn't much you should be doing right now so I'm not sure what you're hoping to get from her?

  • I would definitely mention you're on your 7th cycle and ask her if she has any ideas to up your chances. However, as much as you don't like hearing it, you do kinda just need to keep at it and take your prenatals -- it can take a healthy couple up to a hear to achieve pregnancy unless you're aware of any other issues.

As long as you go in there and conduct yourself in a mature and well-informed manner, she'd have no reason to treat you like a youngin.'

     Hope it goes well!

  • I agree with PP, definitely mention it. It cannot hurt. Also, if you do have to call her back in 5 months (hopefully not though!) then she will have it in her notes that you had been trying and mentioned it. Plus everyone's doctor is different, she may want you to call earlier, who knows?

Don't worry about what your doctor may think of the fact that you're trying to get pregnant. If she doesn't support you or "take you seriously," you should get a new doctor. It is not an OB's place to judge what her patients do with their personal lives. You're doing what you and your spouse have chosen for your family - be confident in it!

And yeah, she probably will tell you to take prenatals and keep trying. lol. But that's what they do.

  • Thanks for the good advice everyone!! I'll mention it to her maybe she can suggest good prenatals.

SweetC80 - I looked at the Vitafusions you told me about, however, I heard that Vitamin A usually isn't good while TTC and they don't contain Iron... I was looking forward to the candy taste lol

I mentioned it when I went during my 7th cycle. She wanted us to keep trying for 12 months, which I expected, but I found it helpful to just discuss things with her. What we'd been doing, if she had any suggestions, what the next steps were if we made it to 12 months, etc. It certainly can't hurt to discuss it, but it is likely that she will just tell you to keep taking your prenatals and trying unless you have other health concerns that could be a problem. She might, however, want to do just a basic bloodwork panel to check that all the basics look good if you haven't had one done by your regular doctor lately.

  • I went to the OB/GYN a few weeks ago and mentioned we were TTC.  I'm only in my 4th cycle, but she offered to do any sort of testing I wanted if I wanted to do it early, before we hit a year.  I opted just to have thyroid and prolactin checked, because that was the most basic, easiest thing to do, and nothing else at this point.  But she at least offered me the choice of being super proactive about it now if I wanted to.

Of course, she also told me to stop using OPKs because they are too stressful, and that I probably wasn't Oing, even though I told her I confirmed it by temping/OPKs... but thats another story.  My point, agreeing with PPs, is its good to mention it.

I like that about your OB hopefully mine will offer some helpful suggestions but I don't find using OPKs to be stressful (maybe because I use the digis)

I didn't know that about Vit. A. My OB was fine w/ me taking the Vitafusion Gummies. I hope your doctor agrees, because they are like candy.

You still need vitamin A. Overdosing is a bad idea, but that is always a bad idea as A is a fat soluble vitamin and you don't pee out excess like water soluble vitamins.

You can always add an iron suplpement.

Oh ok good to know. I was hesitant because of the Iron thing because I'm borderline anemic but I'll ask my OB what's the best option because I don't like taking too many pills & I was tempted by the fact that these are gummy. Are u currently taking any GM? If yes, which ones?

  • You should absolutely mention it. I'm the same age as you (I turn 23 in August), and my doctor is aware I'm TTC. She says to just keep taking prenatals and charting BBT. She knows I haven't been able to detect O in my charts though and we've been trying since December. Even so, she said to give it a couple more months before we talk about Clomid (which I agree with). That would put us at 9 months of trying. I imagine your doctor will say something similar. When you're young, they don't really worry unless you're aware of a condition such as PCOS etc. Either way, it's good to let them know you're trying.

  • This is cycle 7 for us and I changed from my PCP to an OBGYN for my yearly exam that was last week.  It was my initial exam along with my pap and I spent over an hour there just talking and taking care of the basic getting to know you stuff.  We talked about us TTC and she was really supportive and glad to see my charts (I took all of them since stopping BCP in Nov).  She wasn't concerned as far as there being a problem and went over the percentages about the whole year thing.  She said either she'll see me when I get KU or give her a call in 5 months.  She told me that 80% of couples are successful in their first year of TTC, so there is no need to go looking for problems that may not be there.

I don't understand why she wouldn't take you seriously, I'd hate to have a doctor that I couldn't talk to about me or what's going on with my body.  I would bring it up as making a note in your records and being able to discuss things comfortably with her, not as a concern of why you're not KU yet.
