Job interview

I have a job interview on Monday. I haven't been at my current job long, but I don't like working nights so I was looking for something with a better schedule.

I know that they cannot ask if I am pregnant, I mean I am only 5 weeks, but I am nervous that if I am offered it how and when should I tell them? I was not planning on telling my current boss until 12-16 weeks depending on if I was starting to show.

Re: Job interview

  • Personally, I would not mention it at all. I feel like that early on if I was to mention it and didn't get the job I would always wonder if that was why----even though it is not supossed to be.

  • You don't have to mention being pregnant at any time during the hiring process.  However you will want to make sure that you'll be eligible for maternity leave once you deliver.  Federal FMLA law only kicks in after you've been with a company for 12 months and your state FMLA law will vary, but in my state, Wisconsin, you need to have been with the company for 52 consecutive weeks.  If the new company follows these laws to the letter, you may not be eligible for maternity leave and may mean that you have dramatically shortened time available with your baby.  Some companies, however, will let you take 12 weeks regardless of how long you've been with them.  Additionally, some short-term disability programs have waiting periods.  Hope that helps!

It does. I will not have been with my current job a year once I deliver and I have Short term and I know that it will only be 6 weeks either way.

  • you may also want to check with the new employer on their Short Term.  My company doesn't offer it for pre-existing conditions (pregnancy is considered a pre-existing condition).

You're so early that I probably wouldn't mention it, but if their job search process ends up taking a while and you don't get an offer until after you've passed the 12-14 week mark, I would bring it up (after getting an offer in writing) just to negotiate maternity leave.  Most employers would rather let you take unpaid leave than have to train someone else, but you really don't want to be in a position where you lose your job because the most they would be willing to give you is 2 weeks.

Edit: looks like the law in LA requires that your employer let you take at least 6 weeks, so never mind.  I wouldn't mention it.

I'm in mississippi now but I believe it is the same. Someone at work mentioned the company only having to hold the position for 6 weeks.

  • I would tell them at the point that you receive an offer letter. You will need to negotiate for maternity leave since you will not qualify for FMLA.

He's my fairytale, a dream when I'm not sleeping.

  • I wouldn't mention it at all. If you get the offer, I wouldn't mention it until you absolutely have to (i.e. when you are clearly starting to show).

  • I interviewed at 2 different places when I was 19 weeks with my DD. I went back and forth about telling them that I was pregnant. I did end up telling both of them. One of them I never got a call back from and the other one I got the job. They were actually grateful that I told them. My feelings were that if I told them and they didn't hire me because of it it probably wasn't a place that I would want to work anyway (not family friendly). Good luck!
