Our LO used to go down for bed awake, play and then drift off, wake up in the morning and play until we got him. But after a a pretty serious illness and spending the night in bed with mama he now cries and throws tantrums eveyr night when we put him down for bed in his crib. If he falls asleep with us in the living room he will stay asleep but only for a few hours when he will then wake up screaming. When he was younger we let him cry, it was much easier his cries were softer and he tired easier, now he screams and I cant bear to listen to it. I need another suggestion other than the "crying it out" methods. His waking in the middle of the night is really hard on DH and I as is sleeping in seperate rooms as LO and I sleep in spare bed when he wakes and DH sleeps in our room.
Re: Need advice for sleep issues
For change to happen.... There will be crying involved to some extent. The reason it seems worse now is because they understand cause and effect better so they protest more to get what they want.
Not to say you have to do full on extinction CIO. Pick up put down (once calm, not asleep) at timed intervals works well for us. Kind of like Ferber but with more physical contact. Reassuring him verbally isn't enough. But he also needs to blow off some steam.
My DS is doing this now too! He was STTN around 6 months-8 months, now for the past few weeks he isn't. This last week has been the worst-he wakes at the same time every night 11:30 and 3-3:30 and SCREAMS....I let him cry for about 5-7 min, then I go in and get him. He even screams and flails around when I try to rock him/rub his back. I spend a few min trying to calm his this way, but it usually doesn't work. I always end up having to nurse him to sleep. I can understand him waking once to eat bc he hardly nurses all afternoon, but the same 2 times and his uncontrollable screaming is starting to worry me. He is also getting over Coxsackie, so not sure if that has anything to do with it.
Sorry, I have no advice for you, but in a similar situation. Hopefully we both get through this soon!
