New mom - due Nov - Quick question

I have been told not to put my newborn in a onsie until the cord falls off.. so it doesn't cause any rubbing on the cord. So i went and bought the side snap shirts.

Is this what you do?

Re: New mom - due Nov - Quick question

  • I dressed my son in what I wanted even in the hospital. He didn't have a problem, and it came off at a regular time (10 days), with no bleeding, etc.

The nurses and doctor saw him in the different clothing and didn't say anything about not wearing them!

  • I think that's an old school recommendation.  I've put both my kids in regular onesies, sleepers, etc. before the cord fell off.  My pedi and the hospital staff never said anything about it.

  • I was also told to fold the diapers down below the cord. Or Huggies carries a diaper with the cutout. Which i knew to do.

but im going to dress my baby in whatever i want. those side snap shirts only come in white (so far i've seen) which is boring. She's a little girl! she needs some Pink!

  • The side snaps are nice because they don't rub, but putting LO in a onesie isn't going to rip off his cord stump. You just might see some nasty goo on the inside of it.

Is the puss/goo going to stain?

  • I had the side snap shirts but I barely used them.  I put my LO is onsies right away and there was no issues with his cord.

  • We were in the hospital for 5 days, and while we were there, he just hung out in a long sleeved, side snap shirt that the hospital provided. Once home, we dressed him in mostly onesies or one piece outfits and it didn't seem to bother him. Like PP mentioned, there will be goo that gets on his clothes. It only stained one of our outfits (on the inside), which was white and cheap.

Not if you soak LO's clothes. That's why I bought lots of cheap white onesies, because if they get stained (from pee, poop, spit up, puke, whatever), its NBD.

  • Never heard that. My DD has only worn onesies and sleep & plays since a couple days old.

  • I'm a new mom, just had baby in May. When I first started putting her in onesie's, her cord started bleeding alot. It got all over everything I put her in. So I switched to these side tying outfits that were really cute and it started healing faster. Also a stain stick got the blood right out.  So just watch it carefully.

    This.

    and...

The diapers are really more what I worried about. I folded the diaper over and used disposable newborn swaddlers for the first week which dip down in front to stay away from the cord.

I used Shout spray on it and everything came right out.

I wanted to add, when LO was in the NICU, the nurses put the onesies we brought on her.  We just folded the diaper down.  Only a minimum amount of staining and oxyclean got it out every time.
