Pediatrician Question.

This is probably very early in the game to be thinking about but it crossed my mind during my commute this morning. When do you get a pediatrician? I already have one in mind and they are affiliated with the hospital I will give birth in. Do they come see the baby in the hospital or do you just follow up after? TIA!

Re: Pediatrician Question.

  • If they are affiliated with the hospital they should be the one's that come see the baby after birth. Our ped's office with DD wasn't affiliated with the hospital,so we had another family doctor check her out for us, and then did her follow up appointments at the Ped's office.

  • When you go to register with the hospital you give all that info to them. Then the pedi you choose should come see your baby after you give birth.

  • Depends on the peds office.  My OB advised me when it was time to pick a pediatrician and then I called and set things up with the office.  Our ped wasn't working when DS was born but another doc from their office came and then we followed up with ours a few days later.

  • Our pedi is not affiliated with our delivery hospital so A saw the pedis on staff at the hospital while he was there and then we started care with out pedi after discharge. If I had delivered at our regional hospital, our pedi would have come to the hospital to see him.

  • Our originally pediatrician was not hospital affilited, so we saw the on call peditrician.

  • We're going with midwives who are associate with a family practice. Our midwives can care for the baby up to a month after it's born and will make home visits at 48 hours and 2 weeks postpardum, then they can help us find someone in family practice that we like.

I prefer family practice because they look at the whole picture of what is going on in the family and look at mother and child as a breastfeeding couple rather than just the child and just the mother or father.

  • I would call the office and see what they like. With DD they wanted us to come in about six weeks before my due date for a visit to learn about the office.

  • I made a final decision a month or so before he was due, though I was pretty sure who we were going to choose by then.  She did come see him in the hospital, and then we had an appt. a week after he was born.

  • With DD, my OB recommended when to start looking for one.  I don't remember, but I think I was pretty far along - like 30+ weeks.  Anyway, I found one that was close to us & they had a nice website.  Went to an open house & really liked them.  They are not affliated with the hospital I delivered at.  Anyway, they had me fill out a bunch of paperwork once I selected them & told me to call them when the baby was born.  A pediatrician on staff at the hospital saw DD and then all the records were sent to her pediatrician I selected.  We followed up with her pedi when she was 5 days old.

  • Alot of pediatricians offer a "meet the physician" visit where you can come and ask all your questions and find out what their policy of when they want to see the baby after you get home from the hospital. Most don't go to the hospital so your baby will see the pedi on- call while in the hospital. We met with our potential pedi for DS about a month before my due date last time.
