6 week old vomiting - help needed please!

My daughter is just over 6 weeks old and is formula fed w/ Similac.  Although we burp her throughout her feeding (she doesn't always burp of course) she still often throws up....not spits up....throws up pretty much everything she has eaten.  The poor little thing has it coming out her nose and everything!  I spoke with a nurse at the Peds office yesterday and she suggested not giving her pacifier after she eats...which is something that we had done previously.  Well, we stopped that and today she still threw up.  She had mentioned trying to mix some rice cereal in with her formula if the pacifier thing didn't work.  Has anyone tried this?  She doesn't throw up all the time, but has done so 3 times since yesterday AM.  I am not sure what to try next....maybe the rice cereal???  Any suggestions - have you found anything that works?  Any insight would be GREATLY appreciated!  TIA!

  • I know my doc said not to worry if it's not the shoot across the room vomit. They suggested keeping baby upright in a swing or something like that so that baby's legs aren't in a bent position as that can trap air. I've been doing this for a few days and it has heed us.

  • my LO has been throwing up since day one, shes now almost 7 weeks and nothing has changed. we have tried everything from sitting her up, to feeding her less and more often and she still seems to throw up. i dont think its as much as you think it is. my pedi told me to throw some measured liquid down to see how much shes really throwing up because it always looks like more than it really is. as long as baby isnt bothered by it and shes/hes still gaining weight, i dont think its a real problem. however, if it becomes curdled milk and smells acidic, the baby may have a problem like my LO had, acid reflux. thats what happened eventually to us, LO started throwing up real chunky, curdled milk and that made her cry. we finally put her on baby zantac and now its back to the liquidy throw up that doesnt bother her. just make sure you keep lots of paper towels around. good luck!

  • DD did this, she was breastfed, they told me not to worry than she started with green diapers and no other sympthoms.  My doc said cut dairy for two weeks and see if anything changes but I don't think that is it because she does not have tummy issues.  Well two weeks no dairy and guess what no more throw up and no more green diapers.  Ask your pedi if it could be a milk protein intolorance?  There isa special formula you can buy. DD still has some issues with dairy to this day but is okay to eat and drink it I just have to watch how much.

  • Definitely, try to keep her angled in a more up right position when feeding.  Has your pedi said anything about possible cow milk allergy? Sometimes formula is to rough for baby, so you might want to try some of the soy formulas or the special sensitive tummy blends.
  • You really should not give babies cereal this young! In fact... Please don't.

Their stomachs can't handle that yet.

I don't have any advice for you but my DD is doing the same thing. She is on the same formula and everything. It only happens sometimes and often is in the middle of the night. I've tried holding DD different and burping well and often... but she still sometimes does what your LO is doing.

  • Don't do the rice cereal. My older son puked until 14 mos, but was growing just fine and didn't seem bothered by it. Adding solids at 6 mos didn't help. My DD is now doing the same thing at 10 wks. She spits up all the time. Big fill your lap puddles of milk. Just put blankets on everything (couch, carpet etc.) so it is easier to clean up and never go anywhere without burp rags. My son was so bad that no one but immediate family would hold him.

If it isn't going across the room, they don't seem bothered by it and they are gaining weight then it is just a laundry problem.

  • Have you looked into the possibility of her having a milk protein intolerance?

DS would vomit up ounces at a time after bottles and it would shoot across the room. It was really scary when it would happen because it would literally pour out of him and we couldn't get him to stop. Eventually we figured out he had acid reflux and MSPI(milk/soy protein intolerance). Once we switched him to Nutramigen(eventually Alimentum) it stopped instantly.

We tried rice as well before this and all it did was stop him up and when he spit up it was like much versus liquid. We also tried soy but that was almost worse.

It took us seeing 3 different pediatricians for one pedi to stop and listen to me and understand I wasn't blowing things out of proportions and "spitting up is normal". This was not spitting up this was straight out vomitting.

ETA: I missed the 3 times since yesterday part.  If it continues I would look into the mspi but otherwise just keep an eye on it.

  • I agree with pp that you should look into a possible milk/soy protein intolerance.  My LO has this and his reflux was a symptom of his food intolerances.  And then around 7 wks old he developed green stools.  You don't have to have any stool problems to have MSPI, just giving out story... in any event, you should ask your dr about trying a hydrolysate formula like Nutramigen or Alimentum.  They are still milk based but broken down into partial protein chains making them easier to digest.  Try it for two weeks and if no improvement your LO may need an elemental formula like Neocate, which is made up of completely free amino acids, the buildng blocks of proteins, so there are no protein chains for your LO to digest or "react" to.  IMO it's definitly worth looking into.  And FWIW, with my son's MSPI he was still gaining weight fine, so FTT doesn't have to be a symptom.
