RP: Nose Picking - TMI Warning

Lately DD has been picking her nose and eating it (ick)!  I've told her time and time again that it's yucky, can make her sick, the stuff that comes out of her nose is "garbage", almost every phrase I can think of.  She actually kind of thinks it's funny.  I've even tried ignoring it but she does it even when she thinks I'm not aware she's doing it.  I looked in on her today before opening the door at Mom's Day Out and watched her do it so I'm not sure she's doing it for a reaction. I constantly offer her tissues when I notice she messing with her nose.  I try and catch it before it goes in her mouth but more often than not I can't get to her in time.  I'm not sure what else to do.  Is this something you'd put her in time out for? I'm open to any and all suggestions, please... TIA

We were in your shoes, I think it is finally letting up on it's own.  She probably isn't really aware that she is doing it so I wouldn't do timeout.  When she is sitting with nothing to do, try to give her a small toy or something to occupy her hands.  Make her wash her hands when you notice she's doing it, maybe it will help her become more aware.  I really think it's just a phase (that's what EVERYONE, total strangers included, have told me).

  • One of my twins does this and it grosses me out to no end.  We get on his case but he just laughs at us.  I gently swat his hand away from his nose, after a while he loses interest.
  • DS is older, but we explained what is in snot and how it contains dirt that he breaths in.  He is a clean freak so that helped.  We went through 1 year of eating buggers before this though.

  • It's a very, very common thing for 3 year olds.  Booger picking is something that we pretty much had to ignore for it to go away.  Bringing attention to it made DS do it more.  He was almost 4 before he stopped doing it, so like PP, it took about a year.

  • Yeah it's gross, but we ignore it.  If I ask DS what he is doing he says "eating my boogers" and I say "oh okay."  Really, I don't think it is a big deal.  At some point he will stop.  A peer will say something to him or he will just stop.  I am big on picking battles and this is not something that is a big deal in my opinion.
