Toddlers: 24 Months+

What 'random' things make your kid freak out?

We all know toddlers thrive on routine, so it's usually not a surprise when something changes to get a little (or a lot of) push back. But there's somethings that my son throws a fit about that sometims I think border on OCD. But I know that's kind of normal for this age too. So I was just wondering, what seemingly silly things upset your child that kind of make you laugh?

For example, my son can't stand if someone has a napkin on their lap...

Go.

  • Gosh our daughter has a list of them lol.  She used to be terrified of sticks and leaves.  That's passed.  She has a lot of OCD quarks and most of them involve mess in general. No lint, crumbs, hair strands or anything on the floor or she'll either say "get it mama" or if she's feeling brave, will grab it and run to the garbage can to throw it out.  She won't continue eating if her mouth or hands are messy.....list goes on and on lol

  • If he gets wet (like spills water on himself or whatever) he immediately wants to change. Oh, did I mention this includes getting his swim trunks wet? Yeah, trying to go on vacation should be a lot of fun.

ETA: He is also really particular about certain articles of clothing, etc. He has these socks that he REFUSES to wear (they came in a pack, so he has 3 of the same pair).  He starts yelling "NO I DON'T LIKE THOSE SOCKS NOOO" while ripping them off his feet.

  • ...also freaks out from buzzing noises like the buzzers on game shows

  • Not freak out, but very upset if someone sits in the wrong chair (her little table chairs have stickers on them for her, me, and daddy).

And she freaks-the-f*-out over caterpillars.  Seeing real, live ones on a hiking trail, not pictures of ones in books.  "Up, up, up, up!  WHAAAAAA!" full on freak-out.

She used to freak out over having to wear socks, but now that they are bordering on too small, she'll wear them again.

She often freaks out about having to wear a shirt the past few days.  They're *all* itchy, except a plain white hanes t-shirt (so, not the end of the world, but weird when it's shirts she's been wearing for months).

She gets quite worried when she drops something on the floor, definitely with food, but especially a teddy bear/stuffed animal.

And unless she's asleep, she comes close to a full freak-out over being covered by a blanket in bed (but not sitting on the couch or in a chair or walking around with a blanket wrapped around her).

    Kids are curious creatures!

  • My DD freaks if she doesn't have a bow in her hair..."bow, bow, bow" and pats her head. She typically only wears panties and a bow when we are at home. She turns two tomorrow....I'm so done with the bows!

The only thing that really irks DS is his little sister. :)

  • My son's odd one is that he hates it when DW crosses her arms at the dinner table. He'll tell her "no" until she uncrosses them.

  • DD(2.5) is going through a phase where she HAS to have socks on.  I have no idea why because it's summer and warm.  Even when she's sleeping.  The other night, I put her to bed and she called me back 2 minutes later saying, "Mommy, forgot socks!"  She's also wearing her socks with her sandals.
  • I am loving these, thanks for sharing! My DS has more than the napkin thing, just used that to get us started...

He hates stickers of any kind and will not tolerate one stuck on him.

Also freaks if he gets any "liquidy" food on himself (eg. yogurt). Of course this doesn't stop him from wiping his hands in his hair...

And if you line up some of his animals or toys and turn one around to face the other direction, he may cut you....

  • Oh, here's another one: DD has a bunch of Little People toys, and somehow she's decided that certain people go together as a family.  So, God forbid I get it mixed up and put the wrong "baby" with the wrong mommy/daddy.

We took DD on a whale watch last year. Every time the whale would surface, she would freak out. Of all of the animals in the world, whales are the last I would expect anyone to fear. She also HATES having a sheet or blanket on her at night.

  • DD refused to potty in restrooms with automatic flushers and exhaust fans running, haha, she even used to go as far as screaming at people whose potty flushed because it was too loud and scary. She's over all that, but seems a little OCD over some things too. She yells at her brother for putting non-food toys in the play kitchen area, doesn't like certain foods on her plate because it will touch other food (and has a complete meltdown if I accidentally put certain foods near each other... I'm sure there are more I just can't think of right now.

  • DD#1's OCD phase was from 3-3.5.  There are way too many to list, but now that it's way in the past- my 2 favorite:  1) when we arrived somewhere, the car doors had to be closed in a particular order, depending on how many people were in the car, and who was in first, etc.  Argh.  And 2) In parking garages, if a horn, yell, or car door slam ech was interrupted by another sound she FREAKED out.  I seriously thought she had a personality disorder.

FWIW, she is SO flexible and reasonable now.

  • DD1 freaks out if a person who wears glasses takes them off. I have no idea why, but she gets really scared and cries. She knows what glasses are, so I don't think it's that she thinks they're taking off their eyeballs or something, lol! Who knows. She also gets freaked out when her fingers and toes get wrinkly from being in the bath. And like someone else mentioned, she often says her shirt is itchy or that she doesn't like certain shirts/shorts, etc. Her favorite phrase these days is, "I don't like it!" She says it about *everything* lately.

  • This spring and last spring, he freaked out over short sleeve shirts.   It last for about 2 weeks, and it's just when we first put them on him.  Last summer he would freak whenever a door stayed open.  I hated the automatic/handicap door openers.  He would press them to open them for me (this was helpful with an infant), but he didn't understand why they didn't shut when he pressed a button again.

  • OMG these make me feel so much better.

Tim used to freak out about not wearing socks. Everyone had to wear socks at all times even to bed, which would often lead to tantrums in the middle of the night.

He didn't like when we started wearing short sleeves/shorts

If something falls on the floor. OMG it's the end of the world. He screams like you were cutting his limbs off.

If Nick doesn't have his pacifier and Tim sees his pacifier lying around he freaks out and tries to shove it in Nicks mouth and doesn't accept when he doesn't want it. He used to the same thing if Nick had a bottle.

We took the cover off the pool a few weeks ago and that was a big deal too

  • - Any mess or even the prospect of one. If she gets something on her shirt, she wants to change immediately. Lately she's been wanting to take all her clothes off at dinner just so she doesn't get anything on them.

    - Boo boos!! If she knows she has a scratch or bruise (especially on her knees), she will whine about it for days. I had to stop putting her in shorts for 2 weeks when she skinned her knee because she was flipping out so bad over it.

    - When she hears babies crying, she wants to make them feel better. She goes up to them and says "no sad! it's OH-kay!". She usually stresses a little about it until they either stop or they're too far away.

  • This one is new as of last night....can't have the windows down in the car anymore!

We also had a rough transition to short sleeves this spring, he kept trying to pull them down. And it usually takes about a week for him not to freak about new shoes!

  • Hand dryers in public restrooms. As soon as she enters the room, she looks around for one. If she sees one, she says "we'll just shake off our hands."

  • Most of DD's quirks make me laugh.

1 - The garden hose and sprinkler.  When we water the flowers, she tells us "Don't get me wet Mommy".  And the sprinkler...she won't go near us if we're putting it out.  And then she cries once it comes on and we're still out there positioning it and maybe getting a little wet.  But she's not wet...she just gets so upset that we're getting wet.

2 - About 80% of the time, she wears mittens to bed.  And keeps them on all night.  I don't even know how she finds my hiding place for them, but once she sees them, she must put them on.

3 - "Her" truck.  Yes, she thinks our truck is hers.  If she doesn't get to see it in the morning before daycare/work, she flips out.  She'll even say that daddy drives her truck.

4 - She must kill all ants.  Usually with her chalk, sometimes with her shoe.

5 - Hates being barefoot in the grass.  She will stand there and cry until you pick her up.

6 - She likes to bring her Little People into the tub, but once she gets in, they must get out, and be lined up along the edge.  And don't even try to knock them in for a "swim"...total meltdown and yelling at you "No mommy, not nice mommy, I don't like that mommy".

Kids are awesome.  I love watching DD develop her own personality.

  • Mine won't wear shirts with buttons. He won't let his father near him if he is in a button down work shirt.   "I don't like that shirt!"

I actually got him into a polo the other day..He wasn't happy but forgot about it for a while.   But when we got home..."I take these buttons off now??!!"

    He has a bazillion other OCD like thing...too many to list.  Funny now...just hope they don't last:{

My daughter doesn't like me wearing my hair up, or if I get her up after my shower in the morning and still have a towel around my head, she will make me take it off before she will get up.  She also has a thing where (during other seasons) as soon as someone comes to our home, they need to take off their coat RIGHT AWAY!  She hates when people put on coats, which means they are leaving...

  • 1. When things fall on the ground. I'm not a liter bug but an empty CVS bag flew out of my purse and DS took off after it screaming "NOOO NOOOO GET IT!!!!"

     2. Getting things on his clothes. 5 minutes ago he spilled pineapple juice on his tee and he huffed "ugh! you just got it on my shirt!"

    3. Nuns. I occasionally bring my son to work, where half the staff are Sisters. They all offer him treats and hugs and he shrieks with fear.

I'm enrolling him next year so he better get over it.

  • She used to get easily startled by someone walking in our front door.

Now it's mainly the dog across the street...she wasn't scared of him until he ran out their door one day and ran towards her.  Now she's pretty scared of dogs. :(  Trying to help her get over that.

  • Thanks for posting this, I was starting to wonder if we were weird.

DD: will not let me or my mother sing anywhere, anytime. If anyone else wants to sing that's fine. She has to have the covers pulled up over her head at night and if it's not to her liking there will be no sleep. Will not tolerate hair dryers, hand dryers or automatic flushers or pretty much anything else that makes noise without her permission "too noise!"

DS: will not play with fingerpaint or water tables or anything else that will get him wet or sticky. He will not wear button down shirts/pajamas or shirts with collars. He will not sit in his chair at the table if the chair has any speck of dirt/food on it from previous meals and if he spills while eating it must be cleaned immediately. He hates when we brush his hair...and forget trying to style it.
