So Im scheduled at 39 weeks for a RCS(July 13). DS was 9.14 so that's why I had the CS.
After doing a little reading, researching Im thinking about talking to my Dr. on Wednesday about possibly trying VBAC. Im sure he's not opposed to them.Just wondering what to expect. Do most Dr's just let you go to your due date (July 20)? Since there is a small risk of UR will they not use Pitocin? What should I ask the Dr. when I see him Wednesday?
I was full term with DS, and I know every pregnancy is different but statistically speaking, I will not go into labor.
I think I'd like to try to have the VBAC, even if it ends in a CS. Childbirth scares the living crap out of me. My great grandmother died giving birth, was doing my clinicals at the hospital one stillbirth, one maternal death. Cords wrapped, etc..It scares me.
Re: How does this work
All doctors are different. The hospital I delivered in let me go to 41 weeks and allowed me to be induced with pit prior to c/s. I delivered vaginally with the induction so my VBAC was a success.
You are in a hard place because you have done clinicals and have seen bad things. Keep in mind that in our grandparents day, dying during childbirth was not that uncommon. You might not realize it, but you are three times more likely to die during a c/s than you are during a vaginal birth. The maternal death you were around for is EXTREMELY uncommon now. My SIL had her scheduled c/s at 39 weeks and the baby ended up in the NICU for breathing issues (not trying to scare you, just saying that risky things come up either way).
Also, if your doctor is VBAC friendly, he probably would have mentioned it to you early in your pregnancy and even encouraged it. So be prepared to be shot down. You might want to ask to go to 41 weeks and schedule your c/s then if you haven't gone into labor. He might also say that since you had a big baby, this next one will be bigger. My DS was over 10 lbs (though it wasn't the reason for my c/s) and my DD (my VBAC) was 2 lbs lighter.
There are women around here who VBACed 10 lbers, so I am sure they will be a great encouragement too:-) Definitely go into your appointment with lots of questions and make it clear what you want. Good luck!
First make sure your OB and hospital do VBACs some don't or have restrictions in place that make a successful VBAC unlikely.
If you want a VBAC you need to educate yourself and prepare for it so you can give yourself the best chance possible.
And like the PP said you are more likely to die in a RCS then a VBAC so if you're worried definitely go for the VBAC.
The blog has some great resources and info.
Good Luck!
Thanks ladies !
I was adamant I wanted a RCS from day 1. So he didnt even offer it.
I will not, though, be surprised if he allows the VBAC. He didn't want me to have the CS in the first place ! He wanted to induce me at 38 weeks. And I said no way.
Yes, Im aware of the risk of RCS.
We'll see tomorrow !
So saw the NP today, and she's sending me for a growth scan. I go on Friday.
She suspects another big baby & I'll not be able to deliver her
I am very small. She mentioned UR, hemorrhaging, fetal demise, and maternal demise..Ughhh..I wish I had small babies...But for now we're in a wait and see. No big deal really.
But I see the MD next week so we'll see what he says.
He does VBACs, but we'll have to see what the report says first.
Good luck! Fair warning that growth ultrasounds this late in the game are really unreliable (can be up to 2 lbs off) and many doctors use it as a way to convince people to have a c/s. I notice the NP didn't give you any risks of a c/s. (And the maternal demise rate is LOWER for a VBAC than a RCS, as well as the hemorraging rate). If you had a low bikini incision, your UR rate really isn't statistically higher than your first pregnancy. Even having a c/s doesn't stop that- many ruptures are before labor. (Sorry- just ranting that medical people imply otherwise).
Again, unless you have a physical deformity, while your babies are on the larger side, they really aren't "big". I feel bad that they are making you feel this way. FWIW, my former OB "did" VBACs but when I looked into it, his success rate was 10%. To me, that's NOT doing VBACs. So, it could be your OB is in the same camp.
Good luck with your decision. Don't let them give you misleading information and push you into a situation you aren't comfortable with. Make sure you and your DH make your decision with all the information.
Yes, I know about the reliability with the U/S. However my last one was very accurate. I trust the perinatologists. I know technology isnt perfect/accurate all the time, but Im in good hands. They were extremely accurate and said he had a HUGE torso, and head not such a big deal..
Same goes for my Dr. he's NOT a c/s pusher. As I mentioned previously he didnt want me to have a c/s originally. He wanted to induce me at 38 weeks. I said no way. In recovery, he said its a good thing we didnt induce because his torso was so big, I would have never delivered him.
The NP actually said I'd have to talk to the Dr. about it. Its ultimately his and my decision.
