My doctor is being very proactive with me, and I really appreciate it. He is sending me for my first ultrasound next week, which will be late 4 weeks, early 5 weeks ish. What would be the purpose of doing one this early?
To me, it would just cause anxiety. At that point you should be able to see a gest sac and yolk sac. Maybe a fetal pole, but maybe not and almost definitely no hb. I would guess it will be a t/v u/s and they may just be looking for placement (to see that the embie is in the ute, not a tube). Ask the doc what he expects to see at that point to be sure.
My doc doesn't send any of her patients for u/s before 7w to make sure a hb can be seen. She doesn't want her patients to not see one at 5 or 6w and wait on pins and needles for another week or two just to have a repeat scan to see one.

My doc sent me for one that early. The purpose was to accurately date the pregnancy and it was nice to rule out ectopic. It was a bit disappointing since we couldn't see the baby but they sent us back a few weeks later to find the heartbeat.

I just had mine today at 5w6d which I was sure that we wouldn't see anything. However, we were able to take measurements and see that I am exactly where I said I was. The doctor also was able to rule out ectopic pregnancy We were able to see the tiniest little flicker for the beginning of a heartbeat - 100 bpm. I go back on Monday for another u/s to see if the heartbeat is stronger and the lo is still growing!
My doctor is also being proactive this time around. I have never had a successful u/s in the past so it was nice to go today and get some good news!

This. We went for one with this pregnancy that was a little earlier because I was being impatient. The result? I was 4 days behind where I thought I was so their was no h/b. This caused a week of stress before seeing the h/b and everything being fine. In retrospect, I wish I'd waited until 7 weeks.
All that being said, I'm sure your doc has a good reason. Just don't expect to see much and don't stress out if it's pretty boring in there. Good luck!
I guess to rule out ectopic? Typically doctors don't want to do them until 6 weeks but maybe he is always planning on having you come a week later. If not, I'd ask to.

Lost our first little peanut on 1/17/2012 at 9 weeks and 5 days. We miss you little blessing, but we know you were too perfect for this world.
