positive hpt, negative doctor test

Thought this might be a good place to ask.

Has anyone heard of stories of getting positive (faintly) bfps at home, and then getting a negative doctor office urine test the same day (3-4 days before starting period)?

I married my best friend 6/24/07. Started TTC. Ectopic pregnancy found at 6 wks 5 d.(methotrexate shot on 11/21/07). 1st IUI (natural/August '09) - bfn; 2nd IUI (w/ gonal-f) - bfn 3rd IUI (w/ gonal-f) - bfn 4th IUI - cancelled due to too many follicles Laparoscopy 1/10 - endo found 5th IUI (w/ follistism) - bfn 6th IUI (w/ follistism) - bfn Taking a break b/f starting ivf June - IVF - failed December - IFV#2 - failed Trying naturally again for now

Re: positive hpt, negative doctor test

  • yes - drs tests are cheap and often less sensitive than better hpt's.  if you got a positive at home, you're pregnant! you may have to wait a few more days to test positive at the drs office. congrats!

  • Yes, especially 3-4 days before your expected period.  Doctors' tests are less sensitive. Also, did you use FMU at home? It could have been more diluted in the afternoon.

  • I used FMU and thought I saw a faint line but it seemed to disappear. I wait a couple of hours and took another test - Answer- and saw a definite, though faint line. The nurse did say that it's possible that because it's early and mid-day urine, it might not have picked up. I was just curious if anyone else have heard or had a similar experience.

  • Yes, it's possible, especially if you used a really sensitive test. From what I remember, Answer Early is as sensitive as a FRER.

  • I would be hesitant to say you are pregnant if the line disappeared.  Was it a blue dye test?  I believe they are notorious for evaporation lines.  I've had them happen to me one month and I was very disappointed.  I would get a First Response test and try that with FMU.

It seems like there are a lot of women on here that have gone through this. You are very early, just wait a couple days and test again. Sounds like you are pregnant though, a faint line is still a line.

Use the FRER, and if you get a line, pee on a digital.

I almost missed my line at first because it was so faint, but just happened to pick it up a few minutes later when I was done brushing my teeth to inspect it once more before I tossed it... the light hit it just right and I could see the faint line.  Peed on a CBE later that day and "PREGNANT" popped up right away.

Of course I still felt the need to POAS every 3 days afterward until I got my desired two BRIGHT pink lines :)

  • I had the same question a few days ago. I had a faint positive Saturday, a less faint positive Sunday, went for a doctors urine test on Monday and it came back negative. I took another home test on Tuesday and it came back with the a darker line... took my blood test yesterday and am still waiting the results!

I would do another home test with FMU and get a blood test from the doctor just to confirm. Don't let it get you down... those doctors test seem like crap! :)

  • happened to me with DD.  I was 11DPO got a BFP with a sensitive test but very faint and then called my OB.  She said come in this afternoon to confirm and when I did she got a BFN.  She questioned mine and I explained how early I was.  She sent me for blood work and I was pregnant and levels were just fine.  This time around I am not even going in to confirm.  We have an u/s on Friday
