Sorry if this gets long, but I'm so frustrated and can't get a hold of DH. I'm seriously about to cry. DD is supposed to start daycare tomorrow. (We'll call it DC B since it was my second choice.) When we added DD to the waitlist at daycare A, there were 55 kids ahead of her, and they didn't know when we would be able to get in. So I added her to the list at DC B, and she was #1 on the list. DC B called at the beginning of June and said they had a spot for her, but if we wanted it, we had to start paying. The only problem was that they couldn't guarantee a spot in the fall. So I took the spot and paid for the month of June + their $40 registration fee and their 2 extra weeks we had to pay, and figured we would get the August daycare thing worked out. Then 2 weeks ago, they said that we needed to go ahead and pre-pay for July. Well fastforward to today, DC A called and said they have a spot starting on Monday for DD and it's $200 cheaper a month and they can guarantee a spot for August. Perfect situation...right? So I called DC B to see if I could get part of our money refunded. I obviously wouldn't expect the June tuition (even though she hasn't even started yet). And they told me I wouldn't be able to get any portion of my money refunded! Not even a portion of July's tuition. So I called DC A back to see where it would bump us on the waitlist if I declined, and they said we would go back to the bottom of the waitlist and more than likely would not be back to the top in August. So my choices are to 1.) stay with DC B (who we have already paid) and potentially not have a spot in August or 2.) Go with DC A and have a spot in August at $200 cheaper a month, but I would be out the almost $2000 I have already paid DC B.
I'm just so frustrated. And of course this all comes up the day before go back to work.
Re: Daycare drama (vent)
That's frustrating. I'd probably switch to Daycare A because it'll cost you less even in the long run, even with the money you lose from this whole situation w/ DCB. Especially since you may not have a spot in August at DCB (which is ridiculous...once you're in, you should be in for good.)
This is what I ended up doing. I'm very upset that we are out the money, but at least I know DD has a spot. C'est la vie.
I'd do DC A, and maybe write the BBB about DC B's policies. If your local paper has the column where someone plays consumer advocate, you could write them too. DC is expensive and hard to get into - DCs don't need to make things even more difficult!
Edit: didn't see your post, but I think you made the right decision. GL
I have worked in some of the top daycares in my area and there are 2 things that you can try. If you haven't already talk directly to the center owner and make sure to tell her that you want even a partial refund since they couldn't guarantee a spot for August and if you didn't sign anything saying "no refunds" I would remind her of that also. The second thing you could do is contact your state agency; in MA it's called Dept of Early Education & Care. The last thing a daycare owner wants is either bad word of mouth (even if they have a waitlist) or to deal with the state (ESPECIALLY if you didn't sign anything).
I hope this helps, they should absolutely refund a portion since she never started. For what it's worth I would have made the same decision. GL
Thanks for the info! I'm going to try to talk to them face to face tomorrow in hopes that the conversation will go better than the phone convo did.
