1st Trimester

Herbal Teas

Hi everyone! First post, but lurking for a while - I was skeptical to join before I had my first Dr appointment. I'm 11 weeks and just had my first dr appt with an u/s and everything looked good so here I am :)About herbal teas - the nutritionist said no but the midwife said it's ok in moderation. Is anyone still drinking herbal teas? TIA

Re: Herbal Teas

  • I quit drinking herbal teas because so many herbs thing the lining of the cervix and are not recomended safe for pg.  So rather than having to look up EVERY tea before I drink it or drink it then freak out....I just chose to not drink any.

  • My midwife/NP said anything (herbal) you buy at the supermarket is fine. I trust my OB team so I go with what they say, I'd say go with what you trust most and feel most comfortable with. If herbal tea options are going to stress you out more than not, I'd say skip the worry altogether. I should mention I'm not a huge tea drinker, but every once in awhile I do.

  • I drink an organic ginger tea for nausea.  My DR ok'd it on my first appointment.  I think like most things, in moderation, you're good. Enjoy!

  • I've been drinking a Pregnancy Tea blend that has red raspberry leaf, alfalfa sprout, nettle, and peppermint.  Super yummy, and I think it really helps with my symptoms.  Google Wellness Mama for the recipe.  While I haven't had an appointment yet I've done tons of research about the individual ingredients to make sure there are no adverse effects.
  • Yes, still drinking tea. I drink a blend similar to PP, but with some lemon.

  • The only Herbal Tea I've tried will PG is Peppermint for nasuea and it actually did the opposite so... no. I stick with my Green Tea and that's about it.

Americanpregnancy.org is a great site and has information on safe herbal teas.

I asked about this at my first visit and the nurse told me that major brands like Celestial Seasonings are safe to use as they do not use any herbs that are considered dangerous. I with drink lemon or peppermint tea every once and awhile but overall I kind of freaked myself out because some sites list certain herbs as fine while others say they're bad in pregnancy. Google is not always your friend!

  • Thanks for all your responses. The passion iced tea from Starbucks is one of my favorites - and it's so tempting on a hot day!

  • I drink Celestial Seasonings chamomile tea with lemon and honey. I don't think that the Tazo teas would cause you any problems.

  • It depends on what's in them. There's a HUGE range of ingredients in herbal teas so it's hard to tell.

If you're concerned I'd google ingredients (example, hibiscus + pregnancy) and see what it says. I'd been drinking passion tea at work but hibiscus is linked to miscarriage especially during the 1st trimester so I stopped! After looking up a lot of ingredients there are far too many that are linked to unsafe side effects so I'm sticking to water.

  • Pretty much anything that doesn't say "Herbal Tea" on it, like Black teas, White teas, green teas... etc, shouldn't hurt the baby.

Even the Herbal teas by Celestial Seasonings are supposed to be safe enough. If you aren't sure though, Google the ingredients and find out for yourself. I drink Lemon tea and Mint tea, but I also drink my fruit/green teas and Earl Grey religiously.

As a side note, you should try to avoid too much caffeine, but as long as you limit to one or two cups a day you should be just fine.
