Eczema Question

B has always had dry/sensitive skin but at his 18 month appointment the pedi finally said "oh yeah, that's eczema" when we brought up his dry/rough patches again. It seems to be pretty mild and doesn't bother him, but he does have several patches on his legs and arms, some larger than others.

Any suggestions on which lotion/baby wash we should be using to help with his eczema?

Re: Eczema Question

  • L had mild eczema when she was much smaller.  Pedi said make sure it's unscented.  We used Aveeno, which seemed to work great.  I know Jilly or Cheekers (among others) can probably give you a better answer.  Also, I know for a lot of LO's it really helps if you cut back on the baths some.

I think you might see two camps here on the bathing, but that's simply b/c we're each following our own doctor's orders and different things work for different LOs.  We have instructions to bathe daily (baths not showers, warmish water, 10-15 mins).  We use Mustela and it works well for us despite the fragrance.  We then slather with moisturizer after (Aquaphor works best for us, but Cetaphil, Cerave, and Eucerin among others might work too for your LO).  For light patches, we may just dab a bit of hydrocortinsone on.  For tougher patches, we have two separate prescriptions we can us.  Once you can find a routine that really works for your LO, it's often pretty manageable.

  • Like Irn said, you'll see different bathing recs. Our pedi has us bathing O once a week, more than that and O gets really dried out. For bathtime we use the Aveeno wash that is for eczema. As for lotions, we use Eucerin (but we've been meaning to try the new Cetaphil) on his body and Aquaphor for his face and any dry patches on his scalp. Just like Irn we you hydrocortisone for the light patched and have an rx for the bad ones. Good luck with finding out something that works for you guys!

I use a small amount of Aquaphor on E's eczema. We were also given an Rx diaper cream because she is so sensitive there and her dad refuses to change diapers even though she's allergic (don't get me started). E takes a bath about every other day, but gets a sailor bath daily to wipe off etc because she gets dirty playing with LP.

Angry  I just really don't like him.

  • Yes, we are in the bathing once a week camp here.  But I do lotion him every day before bed with Cetaphil Eczema Therapy with Restoraderm.  It's expensive, but it has kept him mostly moisturized except for a few stubborn spots on his arms and on the back of his head.  Those get a prescription steroid cream on them, which keeps them from getting weepy, at least.  They are rough and red, but not broken, which is what they were before we started this routine.

Does he have other allergies? I've noticed on this board (and life) that the same kids tend to have eczema and food allergies.

  • Thank you ladies for all the great tips and advice! I guess we'll just have to try a few different things and see what works best.

We used to give B a bath every night but have scaled back to every other day,  I might play around with that schedule too. He doesn't have any other allergies or food allergies, at least none that we've come across yet.

    Thanks again!!

We are a part of the daily 15 min bath camp here.  Seems to work for us.

For a daily lotion I use the Aveeno Baby Eczema Care, I think it's a good "preventative" lotion.  When she gets flare ups I use hydrocortizone to spot treat.

  • I didn't read the rest of the responses, but every doctor seems to have a different opinion.  We do baths often (every other day in the summer) and after a good soak, lotion up.  We use cetaphil cream for the whole family because we ALL have eczema!  In the winter it's usually worse and we use Triple Cream (not paste) and my husband uses an emolient cream on his on top of that.

  • When Griffs eczema was bad we used hydrocortisone cream.  His eczema is gone but I still use the cream based lotion the pedi recommended... Its the Glaxal Base stuff.  For soap/shampoo I use the kids Dove stuff in the pump bottle.
