Week 23 V-day week????

I just read this on babyzone.com  --- for Week 23

"This week marks an important milestone?if Baby were born this week, she would have a chance at survival. According to the March of Dimes, of all babies born at 23 weeks, 25 to 35 percent survive. This number goes up considerably when you add just a couple weeks: roughly 50 to 70 percent of all babies born at 24 to 25 weeks survive. And 90 percent of all babies born at 26 to 27 weeks survive."

  • Pretty sure it's 24 weeks.

Just goes to show you, you can't believe everything you read on the internet. Wink

  • I think it depends on the hospital.  A friend who is an OB says her hospital is 23 weeks, but my Doc say it is 24.

  • Well it's a much higher chance at 24...but I think March of Dimes is a pretty reliable source? - i did check their website, they  have the same info.

My pregnancy book says that it's UK law that any loss before 24 weeks is a miscarriage and a loss after that is a stillbirth.

I've only heard 24 weeks before.

My doctor told me that research suggest 23 weeks now. However, it really depends on the doctor/hospital. My hospital says 23 week, though many are 24. A friend of mine who is a nurse goes between two hospitals. One is 26 weeks and the other is 30 due to not having the equipment needed knhand for extreme preemies.

  • Well hopefully none of us have to worry about it! I just thought it was interesting because I didn't know the 'odds' associated with it before :)

Sorry - yes, I agree that March of Dimes is a reliable source.  I think I missed that part in your OP and just saw the Babyzone.  But I guess it depends on who you talk to.  I think most would consider 24 weeks because of the larger increase in the chance of survival like a PP stated.

  • I could be completely wrong, but I think I read, possible on the March of  Dimes site, about brain development at  24 weeks. I can't remember specifically, but a higher chance of survival due to this development. Lets hope all of us don't have to find out!

  • Even though 23/24 weeks is technically "viability," my doctor told me I'm not allowed to take a sigh of relief until 28 weeks and even then it should be a little sigh of relief.  The NICU can definitely work magic then, but there's still a high chance of having long-term negative physical, mental or emotional consequences.
  • I read this same thing this morning actually, when I realized tomorrow is my 24 week mark.

  • I have to roll my eyes when people celebrate V-Day. I don't breathe a sigh of relief until my child is born full-term, without complications or need for medical intervention as a result of labor & delivery.

  • Where I work, 23 weeks is considered viable. 23 weeks is standard in most large urban hospitals.

  • My aunt works in the PICU and she told me that at 23 weeks the parents can choose to resucitate, however the baby will most likely have significant health concerns. At 24+ the hospital will usually attempt resucitation regardless :)

    Fair enough point mam.

For me personally, I just do very well with small goals. This was my first major one for both my MFM and myself. Of course as close to full term as possible is my ultimate goal.

  • I think it's the same way we all wanted to get to 2nd trimester. It's just those little milestones.
  • This is one of those night points along the way that make you feel good.
